Misidentified and contaminated cell lines lead to faulty cancer science, experts say

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012

ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) Modern cancer therapies start in cells -- researchers compare cancer samples to healthy cells to discover how cancer is genetically different, and use cell lines to test promising new drugs. However, a University of Colorado Cancer Center study published this week in the journal Gynecologic Oncology shows that due to a high rate of contamination, misidentification and redundancy in widely available cell lines, researchers may be drawing faulty conclusions. "I've seen faculty and graduate students leave my lab in tears when we discovered the cells on the label weren't the cells they were actually experimenting on," says Christopher Korch, PhD, investigator at the CU Cancer Center and director of the center's DNA Sequencing and Analysis Service, the paper's co-first author. "When you get a cell line, you have to look that gift horse in the mouth -- there's up to a 40 percent chance it's a Trojan horse, not what it says it is." For example, the cell line known as HES has been widely used as a "normal" model of endometrial cells since its development in 1989. There are literally hundreds of papers that, for example, look for differences between endometrial cancer cells and these … Continue reading

Blood Pressure Drug: GI Side Effects?

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012

A drug used for treating high blood pressure has been linked with a number of severe gastrointestinal side effects, according to a report from the Mayo Clinic. Between 2008 and 2011, 22 patients taking the drug olmesartan, sold under the brand name Benicar, suffered symptoms similar to celiac disease, including chronic diarrhea, vomiting, intestinal inflammation and weight loss. Fourteen of the patients had to be hospitalized. Doctors tried putting the patients on a gluten-free diet, the typical solution for treating celiac disease, but to no avail. When patients stopped taking olmesartan, their symptoms improved dramatically. Dr. Joseph Murray, the Mayo Clinic gastroenterologist who treated the patients, said the problem is most likely very rare. "The message to people taking this drug is that they should not stop their medications," Murray said in a press conference. "If they're having GI problems, they should talk with their doctors." Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker, or ARB, a popular class of drugs used to treat high blood pressure. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, pharmacies dispensed the drug to 1.2 million Americans in 2010. About 68 million Americans have high blood pressure, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control … Continue reading

A better way out for youth gone astray

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012

INTHENEXT COUPLEOFMONTHS, if Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite has his way, we could be seeing established our very own Drug Treatment Court. The Attorney Generals seeming urgency in setting up this special court is rooted in the belief that it could only bring relief to, or, more importantly, save the lives of young drug-dependent Barbadians who end up before the criminal courts sometimes again and again. The insidious practice of robbery and theft to support drug dependency is not unknown. It is this circumstance that drives Mr Brathwaite to pursue the curtailment of crimes upon the person, but at the same time to offer a lifeline to the perpetrators, who are themselves victims as well. If the root cause of the crime is drug-related, the Attorney General argues, then we need to find out how we can wean more of our young men and women off drugs. Without doubt, Mr Brathwaite will need all the support he can get; and so his call for all to come on board is not unreasonable. But it will take more than a bit of passion from his supporting team. It will require every ounce of commitment. The cause will not be without its challenges, … Continue reading

The choices may be obvious but they are also profitable..very profitable and notas risky as this headline would lead you to believe. These stocks put the Fun back in Fundamentals. Good Clean Fun For the sex component my choice is Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD) a venerable company known for Arm & Hammer baking soda products now comprising toothpastes, kitty litter, detergent, air freshener, deodorant and of course, baking soda and many more household cleaning products. Many investors however may not know that it also manufactures Trojan condoms, home pregnancy and ovulation test kitsand other pleasure enhancing products. There is also a specialty chemicals division. Church & Dwight, founded in 1846, has had this fuddy-duddy image but savvy investors have seen the stock move from $36.78 … Continue reading

Police say Kent and Jill Easter's belief that their son wasn't being properly supervised at school led them to plant drugs on the PTA president. Parents Planted Drugs on Volunteer: Cops

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012

Parents who are dissatisfied with some aspect of their child's education often consider setting up a meeting with the child's teacher or make a phone call to the school. But Kent and Jill Easter, both 38 lawyers and parents of an elementary school student in Irvine, Calif., opted to take matters into their own hands, police claim. The couple were arrested on Tuesday for allegedly planting drugs in the car of a volunteer at their child's school, according to the Irvine Police Department because they thought the parent volunteer "was not properly supervising" their son, said Lt. Julia Engen. "It is an absolute, over-the-top, irrational response to what would ordinarily be a minor dispute," Engen said. "It's inexplicable." Kent Easter drove to the home of the school volunteer, whom police are calling "Jane Doe," early on the morning of Feb. 16, 2011, and placed a bag of marijuana, Percocet and Vicodin on the driver's seat of her unlocked car, according to the Orange County District Attorney's office. Later that afternoon, he allegedly called the Irvine Police Department's non-emergency number and, using a false name and phone number, told the dispatcher that he had seen Jane Doe driving erratically and that … Continue reading

Pharmacy owner sees expansion opportunities in move

Posted: Published on June 22nd, 2012

Bruce Lefkowitz sits in a tiny office where his black chair smacks the back of his accountant's seat. There's no air conditioning, no windows - and no complaints. Lefkowitz, the owner of Harrold's Pharmacy, swears he prefers it this way. Even cubicles offer more breathing room, but there's history here. His grandfather sat in this office and his father sat in this office. Now he's at the helm. But the space problems at Harrold's Pharmacy aren't limited to Lefkowitz's office - there is limited parking, a small sales floor and an inefficient setup - and he knows it's time to move, even if it is just two blocks down Old River Road, to a venue more than twice the size. "We've been at the same location for 65 years, so I didn't intend on moving," Lefkowitz said Wednesday. "But when I saw the steady growth we were going through, and that property became available, we thought maybe it was time." Lefkowitz bought the Old River Road Bakery property in March for $50,000 and the sale was finalized Monday. Lefkowitz's expansion goal hit a major milestone Wednesday. Wilkes-Barre's planning commission voted 4-0 to approve four variances with the property - such … Continue reading
