The company recently signed a non-exclusive agreement with iPS Academia of Japan for its induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell patent portfolio. Based on this agreement, the company will be able to expand its portfolio for the iPS cell research community. Besides, it is well placed to create iPS cells and differentiate them into various cell types to be used in drug discovery and pre-clinical research. Hair-growth drug, Propecia, is being prescribed by a popular hair restoration firm, despite significant sexual side effects. The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approved Propecia in 1997. In 1997, doctors, medical researchers, and hair-restoration expert, L. Lee Bosley voiced concern about the medications severe adverse reactions, said The Examiner. Genetics play a significant role in determining which patients will suffer the most from the disturbing side effects of opiates, commonly prescribed painkillers for severe to moderate pain, according to a new Stanford University School of Medicine study, which pinpoints nausea, slowed breathing and potential for addiction as heritable traits. "One of the most hated side effects of these opiates, nausea, is strongly inherited," said Martin Angst, MD, professor of anesthesia and one of two principal investigators for the new study, which explores individual variations in the response to opiate use. The study will be published online June 20 in Anesthesiology. Genetics also play a likely role in determining which patients will suffer from itchiness and sedation associated with the use of these powerful medications, which include morphine, methadone and oxycodone. While walking her dogs, Dr. Elizabeth Berry sees brightly colored containers of bath salts littering Syracuses Elmwood Park. The illegal drug easily found on the Internet or from dealers for less than $30 an ounce has hit the community like a tornado, said Berry, a drug treatment psychologist at Crouse Hospital. Much different than traditional bath salts, this synthetic drug is so named because its sold in crystals and appears relatively harmless. Its very frightening, said Berry who has seen usage spike in the last six months. People (on the drug) get very paranoid, she said. Theyre very easily threatened, a very high level of aggression, hard to calm. Their reality testing is so impaired, theyre not reasonable. Their reactions dont make sense. Syracuses Upstate New York Poison Center, which covers 54 Upstate counties, has seen an explosion of so-called bath salts cases. Before 2011, there hadnt been a single case reported. U.S. Marshals had been looking for Charles Robert Wallace, 41, since hearing hed left American Behavior RehabilitationServices. Its unclear if deputies knew about Wallaces fugitive status when they contacted him during a traffic stop at North Newport Highway and East Elm Road Tuesday about 4:15p.m. Wallace was arrested in Clayton, Wash., on April 24 on a federal charge that accuses him and five others of distributing at least 100 grams of heroin in Spokane from April 2011 to thisFebruary. Federal prosecutors wanted him to stay in jail to await trial, but U.S. Magistrate Cynthia Imbrogno allowed him to leave so he could participate in inpatient treatment for chemical dependency. She signed the order on May 25. Wallace was to report for a status hearing on Monday, but he never showedup.
