Ex-government drugs adviser: smoking cannabis should be made legal

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2012

Jun 19 2012 cannabis farm Image 1 THE FORMER government drugs adviser forced to resign over his views on cannabis has repeated his calls for the drug to be decriminalised. Professor David Nutt said a decision to make magic mushrooms Class A was "almost the final nail in the coffin of the rationality of the Misuse of Drugs Act" and there needs to be more "sensible, rational" regulation of drugs. He said Government decisions on drugs were often motivated by politics rather than science, and stood by previous, controversial comments in which he declared taking ecstasy was no more risky than horse-riding. Prof Nutt resigned as the chairman of the Advisory Council on Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) in November 2009 over the decision to reclassify cannabis from a Class C to a Class B drug. Now chairman of the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs, he told the Home Affairs Select Committee today: "I think people have a very exaggerated perception of the harms of drugs and they tend to minimise the harms of other activities which particularly young people engage in which are potentially as harmful or more harmful." Prof Nutt called for a system similar to the Bank of … Continue reading

CVS Pharmacy to move into Muskegon-area retail market with its first store on Apple Avenue

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2012

MUSKEGON, MI CVS Caremark Corp. is entering the Muskegon-area retail pharmacy market with its first outlet at 2012 Apple in Muskegon Township. Accurate Excavating of Muskegon began groundwork late last week for the 13,205-square-foot pharmacy retail store at the corner of Quarterline Road and Apple Avenue, which is M-46. Muskegon Township officials did not know when the CVS Pharmacy will open and CVS officials were not available for comment. CVSs entry into Muskegon is significant in two ways. First, Muskegon will now have competition among the retail pharmacy sectors Big Three: Walgreens, Rite Aid and now CVS. Other major pharmacy players in Muskegon and across the country are the discount superstores, Walmart, Meijer and Kmart and locally Mercy Health has a series of pharmacies. Second, the arrival of CVS in Muskegon is another indicator that the ice might be breaking from the commercial real estate sector since the 2008 beginning of the Great Recession. The recession began to ease in Muskegon two years ago in the industrial sector but now there have been more local signs of life in the retail and service sectors as well. The Quarterline and Apple site was planned as a pharmacy outlet two and a … Continue reading

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy Monday announced $9.8 million in grants to 19 stem cell research projects in the state. The Connecticut Stem Cell Research Advisory Committee had selected the recipients at its grant review meeting last Tuesday in Farmington. "Connecticut's continued support of stem cell research has allowed for exciting and innovative research to take place right here in our state," Malloy said in a statement. "The research projects funded by these grants allow scientists to do revolutionary work that puts Connecticut at the forefront of bioscience industry." Of the 19 grants, 13 grants totaling $7.25 million were awarded to Yale scientists, five went to University of Connecticut researchers, and one went to a collaboration between Wesleyan and UConn scientists. Chicago woman cured of sickle cell disease

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2012

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) Chicagoan Ieshea Thomas is the first Midwest patient to receive a successful stem cell transplant to cure her sickle cell disease without chemotherapy in preparation for the transplant. University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System physicians performed the procedure using medication to suppress her immune system and one small dose of total body radiation right before the transplant. The transplant technique is relatively uncommon and is a much more tolerable treatment for patients with aggressive sickle cell disease who often have underlying organ disease and other complications, says Dr. Damiano Rondelli, professor of medicine at UIC, who performed Thomas's transplant. The procedure initially allows a patient's own bone marrow to coexist with that of the donor. Since the patient's bone marrow is not completely destroyed by chemotherapy or radiation prior to transplant, part of the immune defense survives, lessening the risk of infection. The goal is for the transplanted stem cells to gradually take over the bone marrow's role to produce red blood cells -- normal, healthy ones. Thomas, 33, had her first sickle cell crisis when she was just 8 months old. Her disease became progressively worse as an adult, particularly after the birth … Continue reading

Cleveland autism conference expands to meet growing demand

Posted: Published on June 19th, 2012

CLEVELAND, Ohio--As the number of children diagnosed with autism continues to grow, the number of families seeking information about treatment, education, job placement and housing is skyrocketing. And they're willing to pay for sound advice. This week many of them will gather in Cleveland for a two-day conference run by Milestones Autism Organization, a Beachwood-based education group formed in 2003 to provide scientific information for parents on how to best help their autistic children. In the 10th year of the conference, the organizers have expanded to a two-day format for the first time, have moved to a larger venue and expect 900 attendees. The conference isn't free: It costs $125 for family members, and $85 for individuals with autism or Asperger's syndrome. But participants, who numbered nearly 900 last year, seem to think it's well worth it. Ilana Hoffer Skoff, executive director of Milestones, said the conference is an opportunity for parents, educators and therapists to network and to gather evidence-based information on treatments, educational tools, communication strategies and behaviors. Hoffer Skoff, the mother of a teenage daughter with autism, started Milestones with another parent in 2003 to improve services and find people who were trained to work with their … Continue reading
