Growing up as a neural stem cell: The importance of clinging together and then letting go

Public release date: 25-Apr-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Kim Irwin kirwin@mednet.ucla.edu 310-206-2805 University of California - Los Angeles Health Sciences Can one feel too attached? Does one need to let go to mature? Neural stem cells have this problem, too. As immature cells, neural stem cells must stick together in a protected environment called a niche in order to divide so they can make all of the cells that populate the nervous system. But when it's time to mature, or differentiate, the neural stem cells must stop dividing, detach from their neighbors and migrate to where they are needed to form the circuits necessary for humans to think, feel and interact with the world. Now, stem cell researchers at UCLA have identified new components of the genetic pathway that controls the adhesive properties and proliferation of neural stem cells and the formation of neurons in early development. The finding by scientists at the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA could be important because errors in this pathway can lead to a variety of birth defects that affect the structure of the nervous system, as well as more subtle changes … Continue reading

Flush it down the toilet and you harm the environment, same with throwing it into a landfill. Eventually, those unused drugs could be stolen and used illegally. Now you have another option: a prescription drug drop-off operated by the police and the United States Drug Enforcement Agency with a no-questions-asked policy. The Lake County Sheriffs Office and the DEA will hold two drop-off events Saturday, one in Deer Park, southern Lake County, and one in Beach Park, in northern Lake County. Sheriff Mark Curran said this is a great opportunity to prevent pill abuse or to rid your house of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs. I encourage citizens to use this opportunity to safely dispose of unused medications. I see it as yet another way of helping to protect the youth of our community, he said. Medications can be … Continue reading

Prescriptions at dollar store?

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2012

Higher-income people found their way into dollar stores as the recession came crashing down. Nowadays,it's the place to go for, well, dollar store things: party decorations, gift wrap, cheapo reading glasses, reasonably priced greeting cards. But prescription drugs? According to the Sun-Sentinelin Florida, a Deals store -- owned by Dollar Tree and described byacustomeras an "upper-class dollar store" -- openedwith a pharmacy earlier this year. "Deals partnered with PharmaGo, an independent pharmacy with corporate offices in Boca Raton, to run the prescription services inside the store," the newspaper says. While other dollar chains say they have no plans to follow suit, some retail experts speculate that pharmacies could become commonplace as dollar stores ramp up the competition withdrugstore chains like CVS and Walgreens. That got us thinking: Will people be as enthusiastic about buying prescription drugs in dollar stores? (Post continues below.) Baldness drug Propecia and prostate drug Proscar get labeling change for sexual side effects

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2012

Posted by Paul NapoliApril 23, 2012 9:33 PM The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that labeling for the prescription drugs Propecia and Proscar will be updated to include information about sexual side effects that could persist after discontinuing the drug. Physicians prescribe Propecia (finasteride 1mg) for the treatment of male pattern hair loss and Proscar (finasteride 5mg) for treatment of symptoms of an enlarged prostate condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., Inc. manufactures both drugs. More than a million men have used Propecia since it came on the market in 1998. Labeling changes include: Previous Propecia labeling said sexual side effects were reversible and disappeared after discontinuation of the drug. Dr. Anthony D'Amico, of Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, told HealthDay News that the revised labels contain "an important message that people need to hear." Particularly because Propecia is used by 20- and 30-year-olds for hair loss and these are people of childbearing age, so if they are getting issues with fertility that a big issue, D'Amico said. The FDA said the Propecia labeling change comes after reviewing 421 postmarketing reports of sexual dysfunction submitted to the agency between 1998 … Continue reading

Drug Addiction Not A Crime Or Romantic But A Deadly Disease, Says Brand

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2012

Russell Brand is to address MPs over his drug addiction Comedian Russell Brand is expected to tell MPs on Tuesday that drug addiction should not be seen as a crime or a romantic affectation, but as a disease that will kill. The flamboyant film star has been asked to give evidence about his own battle with addiction to MPs reviewing the Government's drugs policy. Brand has given frank accounts of his battle to overcome drug addiction and has said society needs to change the way it views addicts. Writing on his website last July after the death of singer Amy Winehouse, Brand, 36, said addiction should be treated like a potentially fatal illness. "Addiction is a serious disease; it will end with jail, mental institutions or death," he wrote. "Now Amy Winehouse is dead, like many others whose unnecessary deaths have been retrospectively romanticised, at 27 years old. Whether this tragedy was preventable or not is now irrelevant. It is not preventable today. "We have lost a beautiful and talented woman to this disease. Not all addicts have Amy's incredible talent. Or Kurt's (Cobain) or Jimi's (Hendrix) or Janis's (Joplin), some people just get the affliction. "All we can do … Continue reading

Addiction is an illness – Brand

Posted: Published on April 25th, 2012

British comedian and former heroin addict Russell Brand told lawmakers on Tuesday that addicts should be treated "with love and compassion" and not as criminals. The Forgetting Sarah Marshall star said drug dependency should be treated as an illness and called for more "abstinence-based recovery" as he gave evidence to a parliamentary committee reviewing government drug policy. The former husband of US singer Katy Perry, warned that society should not "discard people, write them off on methadone and leave them on the sidelines". The 36-year-old, who has been clean for nine years, described how he became addicted to drugs in his youth because of emotional and psychological difficulties. "It was rough," he said. Wearing a black hat, gold chains and a torn black vest top, he spoke rapidly and addressed members of the committee by their first names in typically disarming style. Asked if he favoured decriminalising drugs, Brand stressed that he was not advocating "a free-for-all where everyone goes around taking drugs" but said existing British laws were "irrelevant" to addicts. "If you need to get drugs, you will," he added."The criminal and legal status, I think, sends the wrong message." Asked if there should be a carrot and … Continue reading
