New Stem Cell Found in the Brain

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., April 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Researchers at Lund University in Sweden have discovered a new stem cell in the adult brain. These cells can proliferate and form several different cell types -- most importantly, they can form new brain cells. Scientists hope to take advantage of the finding to develop methods to heal and repair disease and injury in the brain. Analyzing brain tissue from biopsies, the researchers for the first time found stem cells located around small blood vessels in the brain. The cell's specific function is still unclear, but its plastic properties suggest great potential. "A similar cell type has been identified in several other organs where it can promote regeneration of muscle, bone, cartilage and adipose tissue," said Patrik Brundin, M.D., Ph.D., Jay Van Andel Endowed Chair in Parkinson's Research at Van Andel Research Institute (VARI), Head of the Neuronal Survival Unit at Lund University and senior author of the study. In other organs, researchers have shown clear evidence that these types of cells contribute to repair and wound healing. Scientists suggest that the curative properties may also apply to the brain. The next step is to try to control and enhance stem cell self-healing … Continue reading

Recovery’s improbable providence

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012

Don McHenry remembers the time, back in the 1980s, when he walked through a West Seneca field that later would become the Renaissance Campus. He walked the grounds with Richard J. Gallagher, the man who has helped many local teens tackle their drug and alcohol problems, as Gallagher explained the need for a residential treatment for these teens. McHenry, as president of the Alcohol and Drug Dependency Services board, later met with contractors and architects, and signed some of the loans for Western New Yorks crown jewel in residential treatment for young alcohol and drug addicts. Little did McHenry know that years later, the campus he helped create would help save his own flesh and bloods life. His grandson, Deric McHenry, now 27, is one of the graduates of the Renaissance Campus. Both McHenrys, born 48 years apart, are recovering alcoholics who remain thankful that someone was there to help them become sober. That grandfather-grandson connection is one of the many stories associated with this years 25th annual Kids Escaping Drugs telethon, which airs from 6 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday on WGRZ-TV. Don McHenry, now 75, has had three separate careers, and he still works as a drug and alcohol … Continue reading

Needle-exchange program needs mayor's approval

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012

MONTREAL - Fear is the only thing keeping downtown Montreal from having a supervised injection site (SIS) for drug users, health care and drug dependency experts from across Canada said Thursday. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously in September that Vancouvers Insite centre could not be closed because it would jeopardize the health and lives of its users. In December, Montreals public health department released a report calling for the creation of three supervised injection sites and one mobile unit. Quebecs health minister Yves Bolduc has said he supports the creation of sites. In early April, researchers at the University of Toronto recommended two such sites be created in Ottawa, and another three in Toronto. Yet seven months after the Supreme Court decision, Montreal is still without an SIS, and a large part of the reason is based on the publics fear of drug addicts, experts said at Fridays forum titled Integrating Supervised Injection Services into Health Care and Community. It was part of the 21st annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research going on this week. The experience in Vancouver shows us clearly the difficulties they lived in trying to open we are living the same difficulties here in Montreal, said … Continue reading

Program helps to overcome addiction

"We want to divert people out of the criminal justice system into early medical assessment and treatment." Picture: Lukman S. Bintoro Source: The Advertiser SA Drug and Alcohol Services helped 3071 low-level drug users avoid prison sentences and equipped them to beat dependency last financial year. Under the drug diversion program those referred by police or courts increased from 2546 in the previous 12 months. The program provided low-level users valuable lessons on the risks in illegal drug taking - and a chance to change their lives. SA Drug and Alcohol Services director Dr Robert Ali said the program was particularly effective for people concerned about the heath implications of drug use. "It's another way of going to people who are thinking about stopping drugs and can get those people an appointment with an expert," he said. "We want to divert people out of the criminal justice system in to early medical assessment and treatment," he said. Participants are regularly drug tested and those found using illegal drugs can be dropped from the program. In total, 37 per cent dropped out last year for a variety of reasons. Dr Ali said successes far outweighed the disappointments, especially when participants complete … Continue reading

Drugs, money seized in four-day crackdown on I-85

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012

ANDERSON The smell of bagged marijuana was inescapable in the air of a conference room at the Hilton Garden Inn on Friday, a day known as a "holiday" for pot smokers. Several law enforcement officers walked in and out of the room, which had a buffet line and another 14-foot table covered with a collection of drugs, including 15 pounds of pot sealed in various ways, a quarter-kilogram of cocaine, and methamphetamine and prescription pills. The officers, troopers, deputies and dispatchers were there to celebrate a four-day operation that had been set up to catch drug traffickers and other offenders. "As everybody knows, April 20, 4/20, is a known drug holiday," said Anderson County sheriff's Sgt. Jamie Crawford, who led the operation. "That's why this operation was called Operation 420, to try to interrupt that tradition, I guess you could call it." The origins of "420" are not known but the slang for marijuana dates back to the 1960s, gaining traction in the Grateful Dead tour circuit and seeing wider use in recent years, according to the Associated Press. Tens of thousands of marijuana users and advocates participate in events public and private on April 20, including about 10,000 people … Continue reading

Hoy wants BOA drugs ban to remain

Posted: Published on April 21st, 2012

Sir Chris Hoy says the fight to keep sport clean could take a backwards step if the lifetime Olympic ban imposed on British drugs cheats is overturned. British Olympic chiefs expect to lose their legal battle with the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) over the ban. And that would allow the likes of sprinter Dwain Chambers, banned for two years in 2004, to compete in London. "It will be sad if we have to fall in line with the rest of the world," said four-time Olympic champion Hoy. Speaking at an event to promote national schools sports week, he added: "I don't see anything wrong with having more stringent rules. I think it should be the rest of the world that's falling in line with our rules. The advice from experts and lawyers was the by-law went too far and would be interpreted by Cas as an additional sanction over and above what the Wada code says. A lot of people have been saying for a long time that the BOA is going to lose, and perhaps the penny is beginning to drop. The BOA were out on a limb with this, but the bigger point was they felt they should … Continue reading

Drugs are out there

If there's an upside to your mother dying at home from cancer, it's that there is a stack of heavy-duty narcotics left lying around the house once she goes. So says, rather bitterly, an old mate who lost his beautiful mum last year and has been working his way through the piles of left-over ketamine and OxyNorm the palliative care nurses used to keep her pain at bay. He jokingly invited me over the other week to share a ''heroin lollipop'', his name for the ''compressed fentanyl lozenges'' with ''integral oromucosal applicator'' (aka a stick) his mum sucked on between her shots of morphine. Advertisement: Story continues below When I demurred, he tried to sway me with an offer of snorting OxyNorm - aka ''hillbilly heroin'' - a fast-onset opioid he calls his closest experience to ''returning to the womb''. I again declined (friends, eh?), which didn't stop him Googling government websites to check doses and contra-indications with my asthma medication, you know, in case I changed my mind. As he listed the research-verified side effects of the drug, it struck me this would be useful information to make available to the most vulnerable segment of recreational drug users - … Continue reading
