Research and Markets: The Pharmaceutical Market: Brazil

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2012

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/155e8f/the_pharmaceutical) has announced the addition of the "The Pharmaceutical Market: Brazil" report to their offering. Concentration levels are expected to increase in the Brazilian wholesale and retailing sectors. In the wholesale sector, there are over 300 pharmaceutical wholesalers but this number continues to fall, due to mergers and acquisitions. Panarello, Profarma, Santa Cruz and Athos Pharma are the leading wholesalers. In October 2011, Profarma announced the acquisition of 60.0% of Prodiet. In the retailing sector, pharmacy chains account for around half of the private pharmacy sector by value but they only represent about 10.0% of the total number of outlets. Competition among the five leading pharmacy chains is fierce, and the sector has been consolidated by a wave of mergers in recent years, particularly in 2011. Three leading chains, DPSP, Raia Drogasil and Brazil Pharma, are incorporating their mergers/acquisitions in 2012, but the process of consolidation is expected to continue. The market is expected to witness further acquisitions of small- and medium-sized chains. ABRAFARMA believes that further mergers among the leading pharmacy chains should also be expected in the mid-term. Pague Menos is one of the leading pharmacy chains that could make a move in … Continue reading

Eastday-Big stem cell breakthrough

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2012

A NEW stem cell therapy treatment to develop new bones for patients with bone loss and new skin for recipients of plastic surgery has been developed, doctors from Shanghai No.9 People's Hospital announced yesterday. In the procedure, medical staff use a special machine to collect stem cells from a patient's blood. The stem cells adhere to a base made of a special biological material. The stem cells are then transplanted into the patient's body, where they grow into either new bones or skin tissue, while the base is absorbed by the human body. "So far the practice has been successful in treating patients with bone and skin loss," said Dr Dai Kerong from Shanghai Jiao Tong University's translational medicine institute at Shanghai No.9 hospital. "The stem cell technology will be used to develop corneas for blind people as well as treating heart attack and stroke patients by developing new heart and cerebral tissue." The technology is patented in China and abroad and will be licensed within one or two years, according to Dai. China has established 51 translational medicine centers to boost the introduction of laboratory research into clinical use. The complicated procedures and documentation required often prevent doctors from … Continue reading

By Dahl Erickson on Mar 16, 2012 in News It isnt easy to put a freshman or a group of freshmen into the varsity spotlight but that is what the Lady Braves soccer team did a year ago with a front line that sported three freshmen in the 4A West. Wins were hard to come by, but the varsity experience by young and talented players is the payoff that the staff hopes will lead to wins in 2012 as members of the 3A West. Last year the Lady Braves front line included Jess Woodford and Shelbey Brog as freshmen. With a new spring, a new classification and a new conference, who knows what that lineup will look like on Tuesday as the program hosts Pinedale. We are looking to carry about 32 kids; It is really difficult with over lapping seasons. We will have really low numbers of girls playing this weekend due to either not enough practice or injury from their previous sport/activity, said head coach Allison Hicks. This weekend, the girls making up the varsity crew will be in Cody as part of a jamboree while the JV will be in Lander. With only Kallie Nicoll departing due … Continue reading

Longmont soon to lose its only 24-hour pharmacy as Walgreens cuts hours

Posted: Published on March 17th, 2012

LONGMONT -- In just a few days, Longmont and Boulder County will be losing the only 24-hour pharmacy in this area. Starting Wednesday, the Walgreens at 11th Avenue and Main Street will cut its pharmacy hours back to match the other four Walgreens in the city. The closest Walgreens that will offer a 24-hour pharmacy are in Thornton, at 4001 E. 120th Ave., and in Fort Collins, at 2190 W. Drake Road. The Walgreens in Loveland at 205 E. Eisenhower Blvd. also is ending its 24-hour pharmacy operations next week. "(The decision) was based on seasonal business changes, implementation of a new staffing model and also (Walgreens) no longer being part of the Express Scripts pharmacy network," spokeswoman Vivika Panagiotakakos said by phone this week from Walgreens' corporate headquarters in Deerfield, Ill., just outside Chicago. She said discussions of limiting pharmacy hours at certain stores began months ago, but the company had taken steps in the interim to reduce expenses without cutting pharmacy hours. Those steps included implementing a hiring freeze at the company's headquarters, instituting new hiring guidelines for its stores nationwide and finding other ways to cut costs. "We tried to take these proactive measures first to help … Continue reading

'Forged' brain cells offers hope for Huntington's disease treatment

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2012

Washington, Mar 16 (ANI): A special type of brain cell forged from stem cells could help restore the muscle coordination deficits that cause the uncontrollable spasms characteristic of Huntington's disease, a new study has suggested. Huntington's disease, the debilitating congenital neurological disorder that progressively robs patients of muscle coordination and cognitive ability, is a condition without effective treatment, a slow death sentence. "This is really something unexpected," said Su-Chun Zhang, a University of Wisconsin-Madison neuroscientist and the senior author of the new study, which showed that locomotion could be restored in mice with a Huntington's-like condition. Zhang is an expert at making different types of brain cells from human embryonic or induced pluripotent stem cells. In the new study, his group focused on what are known as GABA neurons, cells whose degradation is responsible for disruption of a key neural circuit and loss of motor function in Huntington's patients. GABA neurons, Zhang explained, produce a key neurotransmitter, a chemical that helps underpin the communication network in the brain that coordinates movement. In the laboratory, Zhang and his colleagues at the UW-Madison Waisman Center have learned how to make large amounts of GABA neurons from human embryonic stem cells, which they … Continue reading

Stem-cell breakthrough could mean treatment for Huntington’s

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2012

A research report published earlier this week suggests a possible connection between the use of stem cells and a treatment for Huntingtons disease. Su-Chun Zhang, a UW-Madison professor, is the senior author of the new study, which shows embryonic stem cells may be used to reinstate the neural circuit needed for motor control that is destroyed in Huntingtons patients. There is no cure for Huntingtons, a terminal disease in which patients lose control of muscle coordination. The key to the study is the use of GABA neurons, which are responsible for creating the network the brain uses to coordinate motor function, but are reduced in Huntingtons patients. According to the report, researchers found a way to manufacture large quantities of GABA neurons from embryonic stem cells, which they implanted in mice to test how well they would integrate in to the mouses brain. The cells not only integrated in the mouses brain, but also projected to the corresponding target and reestablished the neural circuit, which restored muscle coordination. This result suggests a possible treatment for a previously incurable disease, as well as discovering that the human brain may be more resilient than originally thought. While the findings are optimistic, researchers … Continue reading

Marie Pichaske Children's National Medical Center (202) 476-6029 DMD is genetic, but people without a known family history of the disease can get it, as well. This fatal degenerative condition is caused by an absence or deficiency of dystrophin in striated muscle. Dystophin is a protein that helps keep muscle cells intact. It is also an integral structural component of skeletal and cardiac muscles and connects the contractile apparatus to the sarcolemma. Males are more likely to inherit the disease than women. The sons of females who are carriers of the disease (women with a defective gene but no symptoms themselves) each have a 50 percent chance of having the disease. The daughters each have a 50 percent chance of being carriers. With DMD, boys begin showing signs of muscle weakness as early as three. The disease gradually begins to weaken skeletal, or voluntary, muscles found in the arms, legs, and trunk. Respiratory muscles may also be affected by the boys early teens and in some cases even earlier. Exon … Continue reading

Good News for Medtronic DBS Therapy

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2012

Leading medical devices player, Medtronic (NYSE:MDT - News) has received approval from Health Canada for the use of its Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy in refractory epilepsy patients. This therapy sends controlled electrical pulses to a location inside the brain responsible for seizures. While the therapy is approved in Europe, it has yet to receive approval in the US for the treatment of refractory epilepsy. The Health Canada approval is based on data from the SANTE (Stimulation of the Anterior Nucleus of the Thalamus in Epilepsy) clinical trial. The trial, which collected data from 110 patients, evaluated the use of DBS therapy as treatment for refractory epilepsy with partial-onset seizures. The approval will benefit a wide range of patients as it has been seen that more than 30% suffering from epilepsy fail to control seizures with anti-epileptic medication. The DBS therapy is already approved in EU and US to address the disabling symptoms of essential tremor, advanced Parkinson's disease and dystonia. Besides, it is also approved for severe, treatment-resistant obsessive-compulsive disorder not adequately controlled by medications. The additional indication in Canada should enable more patients to benefit from the therapy besides Medtronic increasing its penetration in that region. The Neuromodulation … Continue reading
