Grekos' attorney: Another physician treated patient who died

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2012

Interview with Dr. Zannos Grekos Grekos contests that his office has done ... LEE COUNTY A week after Dr. Zannos Grekos was accused of performing a stem cell treatment on a patient who died, his attorney said another physician was treating the patient at the Bonita Springs practice. And there was no stem cell treatment performed, only liposuction, said Richard Ozelie, the Boca Raton attorney representing Grekos. Ozelie does not identify the other doctor but said in a statement Wednesday that the Lee County Sheriffs Office and the Lee County Medical Examiners Office both have that information. The patient, identified by state authorities through the initials R.P., did have liposuction at the Regenocyte medical facility in Bonita Springs, Ozelie said in the statement. The Sheriffs Office later identified the man who died as Richard Poling , 77, of Newburgh, Ind. The attorney issued the one-page statement because of concerns with the accuracy of media coverage after the state Department of Health suspended Grekos license March 7. The case has received some national media attention. The next day, the Sheriffs Office launched a criminal investigation into Grekos practice, Regenocyte, 9500 Bonita Beach Road, Suite 310. Sheriffs Office spokesman Lt. Larry King … Continue reading

Drugs better for labour pain: research

Posted: Published on March 15th, 2012

Taking drugs to relieve pain during labour works better than alternatives such as massage, machines and hypnosis, new research shows. Painkillers such as an epidural, as well as gas and air, are more effective than softer approaches but do have more side effects, according to the review of 310 studies. Experts found that epidural, combined spinal epidural (CSE) and inhaled gas and air effectively managed pain in labour. CSEs relieved pain more quickly than traditional or low-dose epidurals while epidurals resulted in higher rates of assisted delivery, such as forceps or ventouse, and women were more likely to suffer problems such as high blood pressure and fever. Women taking gas and air were more likely to experience vomiting, nausea and dizziness, the study also found. Meanwhile, being immersed in water, relaxation techniques, acupuncture, massage and non-opioid drugs such as sedatives were described as interventions that "may work" with fewer adverse effects. Both relaxation and acupuncture decreased the use of forceps and ventouse in delivery, with acupuncture also decreasing the number of caesarean sections. But the team found there was "insufficient evidence" to make judgments on whether treatments such as hypnosis, sterile water injections, aromatherapy, TENS machines (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation … Continue reading
