FDA considers putting more drugs over-the-counter, while curtailing antibiotic use

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

By Deborah Kotz, Globe Staff The US Food and Drug Administration has a long wish list of changes it is considering for approving new drugs and making more prescription medications available over-the-counter. In a meeting with several reporters that I attended on Wednesday, FDA Commissioner Dr. Margaret Hamburg said the agency is at the beginning of a process to determine how we can be more innovative to improve access to certain drugs while at the same time curtailing the overuse of others. Here are three initiatives on their agenda: 1. A new over-the-counter-plus approval: Try to envision many of the most commonly prescribed medications -- statins, high blood pressure pills, asthma inhalers, migraine drugs, and the EpiPen for allergic reactions -- going over-the-counter. You wouldnt need a prescription from your doctor if you ran out, just a brief discussion with your local pharmacist to make sure youre taking the drug appropriately. The FDA is considering instituting an OTC-plus designation to address common conditions that are undertreated, often because patients fail to get prescription renewals. When I asked whether birth control pills and other hormonal contraceptives would be added to this list, Hamburg avoided answering directly and said the plan was … Continue reading

FDA asks experts if pain drugs get second chance

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. drug regulators are asking experts for advice on whether companies should restart clinical trials for painkillers that help people with osteoarthritis and other conditions, but can destroy joints. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said these drugs, from the class of anti-nerve growth factors, represent a potentially significant and novel strategy for the treatment of pain," in a memo posted online on Thursday. However, the FDA put a hold on almost all clinical trials of the drugs in 2010 after nearly 500 people taking the drugs in studies had to have their joints replaced. Companies were allowed to keep testing the drugs in terminal cancer patients who had severe pain in their bones, since the benefits there may outweigh risks. Pfizer Inc, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc and Johnson & Johnson are now pitching to resume wider trials, in what could be a multi-billion-dollar pain market. Outside advisers to the FDA will vote on Monday on whether there is a way for trials to move forward, perhaps by limiting the drugs to lower doses, or to only certain conditions where people have fewer treatment options. The drugs have been studied for common conditions like low back pain and … Continue reading

Vancouver pharmacy robbed of drugs at gunpoint

Posted: Published on March 10th, 2012

VANCOUVER - A Vancouver pharmacy was robbed at gunpoint on Wednesday night, in what was the second narcotics heist at the store in as many weeks. Two masked men walked into the pharmacy in the 4800-block of Main Street shortly after 8 p.m., brandishing what appeared to be a handgun and demanded narcotics from the staff, according to Vancouver police. The thief with the gun kept watch over several customers while the other one took the drugs from a staff member. Both men fled with an unknown quantity of pharmaceutical narcotics and headed north, VPD spokesman Const. Lindsey Houghton said in a release. The officer didn't specify what kind of drugs were taken. One of the men was described as Asian, in his early twenties, 5-foot-6, and 140 lbs., with a slim build. He was wearing a black baseball hat with a Nike "swoosh" on the front, a blue hoodie with the hood pulled up, a bandana covering his face, blue jeans, white sneakers, white gloves, and he was holding what appeared to be a silver handgun in his right hand. The second man was described as having the same body type and is also believed to be in his … Continue reading

Patient dies during procedure

(CNN) - A Florida cardiologist could have his medical license revoked by state authorities who have accused him of performing illegal stem cell therapy on a patient who died during the procedure. Florida's Department of Health ordered the emergency suspension of Zannos Grekos' medical license Wednesday, accusing the Bonita Springs doctor of violating an emergency order against using stem cell treatments in Florida and causing the death of an unidentified elderly patient. Grekos can appeal the order. According to the license suspension order, Grekos performed a stem cell treatment this month on the patient, who was suffering from pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis. Both diseases restrict blood flow to the heart. "During said stem cell treatment, patient R.P. suffered a cardiac arrest and died," the suspension order said. CNN first investigated Grekos' activities in 2009, when he said he was using stem cell therapy for a company called Regenocyte Therapeutic. His profile, listed on the company's website, describes Grekos as having "extensive experience in the field of stem cell therapy" and says he "was recently appointed to the Science Advisory Board of the United States' Repair Stem Cell Institute." At the time of CNN's interview, Grekos said he extracted stem … Continue reading

Stem cell treatment tricks immune system into accepting donor organs, study shows

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2012

By Julie Steenhuysen CHICAGO Scientists have found a way to trick the immune system into accepting organs from a mismatched, unrelated organ donor, a finding that could help patients avoid a lifetime of drugs to prevent rejection of the donated organ. Of eight kidney transplant patients who have been treated with this new approach, five have managed to avoid taking anti-rejection drugs a year after their surgery, according to the study published on Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine. And one patient, 47-year-old Lindsay Porter of Chicago, is completely free of anti-rejection drugs nearly two years after her kidney transplant. This new approach would potentially offer a better quality of life and fewer health risks for transplant recipients I hear about the challenges recipients have to face with their medications and it is significant. Its almost surreal when I think about it because I feel so healthy and normal, she said in a statement. With conventional organ transplants, recipients need to take pills to suppress their immune systems for the rest of their lives. These drugs can cause serious side effects, including high blood pressure, diabetes, infection, heart disease and cancer. This new approach would potentially offer a better quality of … Continue reading
