Patient dies during procedure

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2012

(CNN) - A Florida cardiologist could have his medical license revoked by state authorities who have accused him of performing illegal stem cell therapy on a patient who died during the procedure. Florida's Department of Health ordered the emergency suspension of Zannos Grekos' medical license Wednesday, accusing the Bonita Springs doctor of violating an emergency order against using stem cell treatments in Florida and causing the death of an unidentified elderly patient. Grekos can appeal the order. According to the license suspension order, Grekos performed a stem cell treatment this month on the patient, who was suffering from pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary fibrosis. Both diseases restrict blood flow to the heart. "During said stem cell treatment, patient R.P. suffered a cardiac arrest and died," the suspension order said. CNN first investigated Grekos' activities in 2009, when he said he was using stem cell therapy for a company called Regenocyte Therapeutic. His profile, listed on the company's website, describes Grekos as having "extensive experience in the field of stem cell therapy" and says he "was recently appointed to the Science Advisory Board of the United States' Repair Stem Cell Institute." At the time of CNN's interview, Grekos said he extracted stem … Continue reading

Arthritis Drugs: Side Effects Of Shelved Medication Include Bone Decay, Joint Deterioration

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2012

Two years ago a series experiments to develop a new prescription drug that would successfully alleviate the pain caused by arthritis, conducted by some of the world's biggest pharmaceutical companies, was put on hold by the United States' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after reports revealed that the drugs were causing bone decay and joint deterioration. On Monday, March 12, Pfizer Inc., Johnson & Johnson and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals will argue that they should continue to study the drug, while taking the necessary safety precautions to protect their patients. The FDA's proposed questions seem to attempt to continue to keep the companies from moving forward with their experiments and limit future testing. "Considering what is known thus far about the risks and benefit associated with this class of biologic agents, are there any populations for which further clinical development would be acceptable?" asks one agency discussion question, according to AP. If the drugs are approved by the FDA their use may be more narrowly defined than originally intentioned. The drugs were once touted by pharmaceutical companies. They are known as nerve-growth-factor inhibitors, and considered to be potential breakthrough for treating osteoarthritis, back pain and chronic pain conditions. For over a century … Continue reading

Statin side effects: How common are memory loss, diabetes, and muscle aches?

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2012

By Deborah Kotz, Globe Staff When the US Food and Drug Administration told the makers of cholesterol-lowering statins to add new side effect warnings to their labels last week, many of the 40 million statin users may have been unaware of the extent of the risks associated with these drugs that have been touted by some cardiologists to be safer than aspirin. No question, statins -- which include Lipitor (atorvastatin), Zocor (simvastatin), and Crestor (rosuvastatin) -- are relatively safe drugs, and theyve saved thousands of lives over the past 20 years, particularly in men with established heart disease. But like any drug they can cause problems in some, including muscle aches, an increased risk of diabetes, and, gaining recent attention, memory loss. University of California-San Diego researcher Beatrice Golomb published a paper two years ago describing 171 statin users who reported that they had developed memory problems and dementia-like symptoms that they attributed to their use of the medications. The vast majority experienced an improvement in their symptoms after stopping the drugs and many saw their symptoms return after going back on statins. Robert Grindell, a state employee from Makinen, Minn., told me his short-term memory began to deteriorate after … Continue reading

LSD 'helps alcoholics quit drink'

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2012

8 March 2012 Last updated at 21:44 ET One dose of the hallucinogenic drug LSD could help alcoholics give up drinking, according to an analysis of studies performed in the 1960s. A study, presented in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, looked at data from six trials and more than 500 patients. It said there was a "significant beneficial effect" on alcohol abuse, which lasted several months after the drug was taken. An expert said this was "as good as anything we've got". LSD is a class A drug in the UK and is one of the most powerful hallucinogens ever identified. It appears to work by blocking a chemical in the brain, serotonin, which controls functions including perception, behaviour, hunger and mood. Researchers at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology analysed earlier studies on the drug between 1966 and 1970. Patients were all taking part in alcohol treatment programmes, but some were given a single dose of LSD of between 210 and 800 micrograms. Given the evidence for a beneficial effect of LSD on alcoholism, it is puzzling why this treatment approach has been largely overlooked For the group of patients taking LSD, 59% showed reduced levels of alcohol misuse … Continue reading

Study: LSD may treat alcoholism

Posted: Published on March 9th, 2012

Study: LSD may treat alcoholism By Ella Pickover Friday, March 09, 2012 Psychedelic drug LSD could be used as an effective method to treat alcoholism, scientists say. The use of lysergic acid diethylamide, coupled with relapse prevention treatments, could help alcoholics steer clear of the bottle, research published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology suggests. Teri Krebs and Pal-Orjan Johansen, who were performing research fellowships at Harvard Medical School in the US, examined a number of previous studies, mostly from the 1960s and 1970s. They found a number of clinics used the drug to treat alcoholism with some success and discovered evidence for a clear and consistent beneficial effect of a low dose of LSD for treating alcohol dependency. Researchers examined 536 participants, across six medical trials, and found that 59% of LSD patients had improved compared to 38% of control patients. They said the positive effects of a single dose of the drug, tested by a standardised assessment of problem alcohol use, appeared to last for up to 12 months. However, the researchers suggested the repeated use of the medication, coupled with preventative treatments, might provide more sustained results.
