Jail for Loftus high street pharmacy raider

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012

A PHARMACY raider was caught red-handed outside the ransacked chemist’s with a bag full of drugs within hours of his jail release. Paul Jefferson, 37, was found and searched at the back of the Lloyds Pharmacy on Loftus high street. He had a bottle of aftershave from the store and a bag of prescription medication which was discarded nearby, Teesside Crown Court heard. Hours earlier he had been released after almost two months remanded in custody. At first he denied being responsible for the burglary but had a change of heart and owned up two days later, said prosecutor Rachel Masters. Jefferson, of Catherine Street, Lingdale, admitted burglary and possessing a small amount of amphetamine, a Class B drug. The offences from November 29 last year put him in breach of a suspended sentence imposed two months earlier for another burglary. His record of 106 offences stretched back to 1990. Julian Gaskin, defending, said Jefferson acted as a lookout while others went into the pharmacy. He said Jefferson had been thrown out by his landlord because the police had been to his lodgings so many times. Jefferson ended up hanging around with the wrong crowd and taking drugs again. He … Continue reading

Philip, 21, said: “It is getting progressively worse, that last bit of freedom he has left is going to come to an end and his life will go down the pan. “He is really, really smart – his brain is certainly in full health, but his body lets him down. It’s heartbreaking. I just want to see my best friend happy again and to help him get back on his feet.” Paul used to play at nightclubs, parties and festivals across the UK and Europe and taught young people to DJ until 2006, when the crippling neurological condition forced him to retire. OHSU doctors see success with new stroke treatment

Posted: Published on February 4th, 2012

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) - A team of researchers and medical professionals from Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital are seeing remarkable results from a breakthrough procedure designed to help stroke patients. In a nationwide trial involving more than 140 patients, doctors experimented with the new procedure which uses removable stints as of way opening blocked arteries in the brain. The procedure was performed on patients within eight hours of an acute ischemic stroke, caused by a lack of blood flow to the brain often due to a blood clot. Doctors use a catheter to place a small stint in the affected blood vessel, causing blood to again flow to the brain, minimizing brain damage. Doctors said the clot is absorbed by the stint's mesh and both are then removed from the affected artery within five minutes of insertion. The new procedure differs from the more common way to treat clots in the brain, which uses a corkscrew-like device to remove the clot and sometimes requires several attempts. Doctors in the study said 56 percent of patients utilizing the new procedure showed an increased rate of recovery and were less like to die as a result of a stroke. A team of … Continue reading

A video posted online of a young girl cutting her mother's hair to help her understand the trauma of breast cancer treatment has attracted thousands of viewers. Sara Duncan, 44, was diagnosed last September and wanted to help her six-year-old daughter, Lola, cope with her battle against the disease. In the video, Lola cuts her mother's hair as they laugh and chat - to help the youngster grasp what will happen during chemotherapy. When her hair is reduced to a close crop, Lola gently uses a razor to shave Ms Duncan's head, before Sara finishes the job herself. The film ends with a message asking viewers to donate to cancer charities. It was initially recorded by dad Craig as a family memento, but they decided to post the video on YouTube to raise £100,000 for 10 cancer charities. Ms Duncan told Sky News: "It's turning what could be a disaster and sad thing into 'Let's make it fun.' "You agonise over losing your hair because it's such a big part of a person's appearance." OHSU study points to advances in stroke treatment

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2012

By Peter Korn The Portland Tribune, Feb 3, 2012 ADVERTISEMENTS A new procedure to help people in the crucial first hours after they have suffered strokes may soon be the standard of care, according to an Oregon Health & Science researcher who contributed to a study released Friday. Traditionally, victims of strokes – which involves clots blocking the flow of blood to the brain – are treated with a corkscrew-like device that is twisted into the clot and gently pulled out. The new procedure opens the blocked artery by inserting into the brain a small mesh stent made of platinum and titanium. The stent expands the interior walls of the artery and allows blood to get to the patient’s brain. The clot is captured by the sent and after a few minutes the stent and clot are removed together. A study of the new procedure was presented this morning at a medical conference in New Orleans. The study involved more than 140 stroke patients at 18 medical centers throughout the U.S., 35 of whom were treated at OHSU. The new stent procedure appeared more effective than a traditional device, according to the study. More than half the patients treated with … Continue reading
