Metro to remain in the mix despite heightened Canadian pharmacy competition

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2012

MONTREAL - Canadian grocery chain Metro plans to maintain its pharmacy strategy despite industry consolidation and intensifying competition from U.S.-based rivals, its chief executive says. "It's competitive but as a percentage of total pharmacies out there in Quebec and Ontario, it's not that big a deal," CEO Eric La Fleche said Tuesday in an interview. "There a hundreds and hundreds of pharmacies out there already today so competition is strong already. It could get even more competitive but it's at the margins." Retail giant Walmart continues to expand its Canadian presence by adding Supercentres with full pharmacies in Metro's home turf in Quebec. Target announced plans Monday to operate franchise pharmacies at its Canadian locations next year. And California-based health-care giant McKesson Corp. said it will pay $920 million for part of the retail network of Edmonton pharmacy operator Katz Group of Canada. McKesson will gain control of 850 stores across Canada that operate mainly under the I.D.A. and Guardian brands. It's also buying Katz's franchise business, which provides services to 160 Medicine Shoppe outlets across the country. McKesson has been the primary pharmaceutical distributor to both businesses for years. In addition to competing against Metro, the U.S.-based players will … Continue reading

Blue Shield agrees to cover autism therapy

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2012

Reporting from Sacramento— A major health insurance company has settled an enforcement action with state regulators over providing special therapy for autism patients. California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones on Tuesday said that Blue Shield of California Life & Health Insurance Co. agreed to immediately cover the cost of applied behavior analysis therapy, which Jones described as a well-recognized and effective treatment. The settlement with the Insurance Department stems from a dispute that began in July when Jones filed an enforcement action against Blue Shield. "This favorable settlement agreement eliminates the frustration and insecurity so many families have faced when seeking autism treatment for their children," Jones said in a statement. Blue Shield no longer will deny the therapy as a non-covered service, challenge its medical necessity or force parents to get approval from an independent medical reviewer before starting treatment, Jones said. The agreement is similar to one made with the California Department of Managed Health Care in July, said Tom Epstein, Blue Shield's vice president for communications. In fact, Blue Shield in July began paying for the therapy for members enrolled in plans regulated by the Insurance Department, he said. Blue Shield was the first insurer to agree to … Continue reading

Laser targeting could help fight Parkinson's

Posted: Published on February 1st, 2012

SAN FRANCICSO (KGO) -- Innovative research at San Francisco's Gladstone Institutes could lead to a new treatment for fighting Parkinson's disease. Research using lasers is pointing the way to a new target for drugs. Dr. Anatol Kreitzer has spent years shedding new light on the neural pathways of Parkinson's disease. In fact, when ABC7 first met him, he was using lasers to coax the neurons into firing, allowing him to map them. "The first step was to identify which circuits are actually affected in Parkinson's disease, and that's what we did," he said. That laser mapping allowed him to move to the next logical step, looking for a way to interrupt the malfunctioning circuits that cause the symptoms of Parkinson's. After crunching data on hundreds of candidates, his team at San Francisco's Gladstone Institutes zeroed in on a tiny protein called RGS4. It regulates signaling in the part of the brain responsible for movement. "RGS4 becomes overactive in Parkinson's disease and it actually causes these circuits to become overactive as well," Kreitzer explained. But the team was also looking for a cause and effect. Scientists have long known that a drop in dopamine is associated with the onset of Parkinson's. … Continue reading

NPH diagnosis in San Tan Valley man returns him to normal life

Posted: Published on January 31st, 2012

Surgery to implant a shunt into a 75-year-old San Tan Valley man's brain has returned him to a nearly normal life years after he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and began suffering from bladder incontinence and dementia.  Edwin "Ed" Stall had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease-like symptoms in 2007 at the age of 71. It was hard for him to walk and his balance was off. An MRI showed "nothing alarming," Stall said. "I always felt a sensation like I was falling forward when I was walking," he said. After falling a few times, the doctor tried to correct Edwin's gait, or his stance, as he walked. "He's always walked faster than me, because he's taller," his wife of 54 years said. "Then I started walking faster than he did." Over the next three years, Stall and his wife, Betty continued to seek answers to his medical problems to no avail. Slowly, he stopped being able to do work around the house or play a round of golf, he said. He was unable to walk down the street to a friend's house and instead had to have Betty drive the car. Eventually bladder incontinence made it nearly impossible to leave … Continue reading
