Multi-Society Guidelines on the Use of Multimodality CV Imaging in Competitive Athletes – The Cardiology Advisor

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2020

A set of guidelines regarding the use of multimodality cardiovascular (CV) imaging in young adult competitive athletes, focusing on the distinction between exercise-induced cardiac remodeling (EICR) and cardiac pathology, was formulated by an expert writing group and published in the Journal of the American Society of Echocardiography. This report was endorsed by the American Society of Echocardiography, in conjunction with the Society of CV Computed Tomography (CT) and the Society for CV Magnetic Resonance (CMR). Young competitive athletes with unrecognized CV disease (CVD) who undergo strenuous exercise may be at increased risk for serious adverse events, including sudden cardiac death. Continue reading

Graduate aims to make a difference amid challenges of lab work on COVID-19 project – SFU News – Simon Fraser University News

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2020

Abeline Watkins hopes the data she is discovering as part of SFU professor Peter Rubens Molecular Cardiac Physiology Group may one day make a difference in addressing the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Watkins is investigating whether Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive component of cannabis sativa, can help to mitigate the negative side effects of taking Azithromycin, a drug that has been proposed to treat symptoms of COVID-19, particularly lung problems. The research is being funded by her second Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) for sciences, awarded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC). Continue reading

Optical mapping used to assess effect of hydroxychloroquine on heart rhythm – Cardiac Rhythm News

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2020

Researchers have used an optical mapping system to observe how the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, which has been touted as a possible treatment for COVID-19, creates disturbances in heart rhythm in an animal model. The research, published in the journal Heart Rhythm, found that the drug made it surprisingly easy to trigger arrhythmias in two types of animal hearts by altering the timing of electrical waves that control heartbeat. We have illustrated experimentally how the drug actually changes the waves in the heart, and how that can initiate an arrhythmia, said Flavio Fenton, a professor in the School of Physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, USA) and the papers corresponding author Continue reading

Risk of Dying Doubled in Wuhan COVID-19 Patients With Hypertension – TCTMD

Posted: Published on June 11th, 2020

New observational data from Wuhan, China, suggest that hypertensive patients hospitalized with COVID-19 had a twofold increased risk of dying compared to those without hypertension, and that not being on medication for hypertension at the time of hospitalization worsens outcomes. The study also provides additional reassurance about the use of antihypertensives that target the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS). Patients with RAAS inhibitors were not exposed to a higher risk of mortality in our study and, after pooling previously published data in a study-level meta-analysis, the use of RAAS inhibitors was shown to be possibly associated with lower risk of mortality, write Chao Gao, MD (Xijing Hospital, Xian, China), and colleagues.
