Researchers at the Department of Veterans Affairs and University of California-Los Angeles are studying whether a chemotherapy drug for prostate cancer can help reduce the severity of COVID-19 in men. The VA announced last week that it will test degarelix, also known by its brand name Firmagon, in nearly 200 veterans hospitalized with the novel coronavirus at VA medical centers in Los Angeles, New York City and the Puget Sound area of Washington. The death of a South Australian woman with cerebral palsy who was forced to live in "disgusting and degrading" conditions is a "deeply distressing case", the man leading the disability royal commission says. Ronald Sackville QC says his inquiry may also look directly into the plight of Ann-Marie Smith, who had been receiving full-time care through the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The 54-year-old died in hospital in April from septic shock, multiple organ failure, severe pressure sores and malnourishment. Continue reading

MINNETONKA, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A study completed by UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH) with the Yale School of Medicine found that older COVID-19 patients with hypertension taking angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors had a lower risk of COVID-19 hospitalization. A pragmatic clinical trial will be a critical next step. The study, which was recently submitted for peer-reviewed publication, analyzed retrospective data from about 10,000 patients testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 who were enrolled in Medicare Advantage or commercially insured plans, and had a prescription for one or more anti-hypertensive medications.
