MENDHAM TWP. About 70 riders joined a spinathon at Cyclebar in Bernardsville on Dec. 8 to pedal for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation.

The two-hour spinathon raised $40,000, and the amount is expected to continue climbing. Riders are still accepting donations toward an overall goal of $65,000.

The event was kicked off with support from Bernardsville Mayor Mary Jane Canose, who stopped by to congratulate the riders and to recognize Cyclebar for its support in hosting the event.

The event was one of 28 spinathons organized across the country, from New York City to San Francisco, all in support of the Crohns & Colitis Foundations mission. The foundation is dedicated to finding a cure for Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis and to provide support for the more than 3 million Americans living with these debilitating diseases,s aid a statement.

In addition to funding medical research, the nonprofit provides patient education, support groups, public awareness and public policy advocacy. Founded in 1967, the foundation is responsible for many breakthroughs in medical research and treatment.

Township Councilwoman Amalia Duarte, who was part of the spinathon organizing committee and is a New Jersey chapter board member, said she was thrilled with the events success.

We are so grateful to all the riders who came out to support this cause. And, we owe a big thanks to Cyclebar for being so supportive and accommodating to us, especially helping people who have never taken a spin class before, Duarte said. They helped everyone get comfortable on their bikes and provided everything we needed to have a great time, while raising money for the foundation.

"The Spinathon was truly an inspirational event and the enthusiasm and commitment of the volunteers was awe inspiring. I am proud to have CycleBar in our business community and commend them for lending their time and their facility to help support such a worthy cause," Canose said.

The event was also supported by the Starbucks and Kings in Bernardsville and Wegmans. To make a donation or to get more information about the Crohns & Colitis Foundation New Jersey Chapter, visit https://www.crohnscolitisfoundation.org/chapters/newjersey.
