Sylvan Lakes health care facility took one step ahead of the rest of central Alberta when they opened their Advanced Ambulatory Care Service on June 4th, 2018.

The service provides ambulatory care for the treatment of lesser injuries and illnesses.

We offer unscheduled treatments for non-life-threatening emergencies. If you have to get sutures, put a simple cast on a simple fracture, having a seizure... we see a lot of influenza and things of that nature. So, not necessarily an urgent care service, kind of like a step below urgent care, and above what walk-in clinics would offer, explained Christine Farris,Advanced Ambulatory Care Manager.

Farris says Sylvan Lake's is the first Advanced Ambulatory Care Service in the area. The service is quite popular in southern Alberta but is only slowly making way north. Currently, only Edmonton, La Crte, and Sylvan Lake offer the service outside of the southern Zone.

In Sylvan Lake, the service is growing more and more popular with residents. In 2019, the service made 17,926 visits compared to 2018s 9,065 visits.

To be fair, the stats show from June to the end of December, and then 2019 is January until December. We werent open a full year the first year we were open. We have seen definitely an increase in patient visits, noted Farris.

Farris believes positive interactions with the public have helped to increase the services popularity among residents.

I think there is definitely more awareness that we are there and where we are located. I think theres been a lot of communication in and around the community about the service that they received. The feedback Ive got for the most part has been pretty positive. Thats a great tribute to the staff, physicians, and all the other services that are at the site to help us provide the service to Sylvan Lake and area residents, explained Farris.

Overall, Farris was extremely proud of the team of staff who help to make the service successful. She is also thankful for the boundless support of Sylvan Lake residents.
