Teen prescription drug abuse on the rise
ALBANY -- "We #39;re here to talk about prescription drug abuse and it is an epidemic problem," said Richard Hartunian, United States Attorney for the northern district of New York.Hartunian along with several local law enforcement agencies helped kick off a national campaign at a local level - Medicine Abuse Project.This coming Friday BOCES will be holding a webinar, which will educate students, parents and teachers on the dangers of prescription drug abuse."It #39;s becoming a bigger concern it is readily accessible," Kimberly Aichner, St. Peter #39;s Addiction Recovery Center.Aichner has experienced this problem not just in urban environments, but also in rural communities. "Addiction recovery center we know what to expect with the use of marijuana, we know what the signs and symptoms are," said Aircher.The problem is, these prescription drugs are in almost every medicine cabinet. "These prescription drugs they don #39;t even know what they are taking half the time. They are just taking a pill that someone gives them. They don #39;t even know what it is, what it #39;s for and what kind of reaction they are going to have from it," said Aicher.Pain and ADHD medications are the most commonly abused drugs, not just because they are readily accessible, but because they are cheap.
