Allianz National Hurling League Division Two: Clare 2-20 Down 0-6

THE long journey to Ennis proved to be a fruitless one for Downs hurlers as they were on the receiving end of a crushing 20-point defeat by Clare at Cusack Park yesterday.

Downs wastefulness was reflected in the stats as they hit 20 wides over the 70 minutes, nine in the first half and 11 after the break.

This lack of scoring ability is sure to trouble Down boss Gerard Monan as his side worked hard to create chances but just could not find the target when points were there for the taking.

However, Monan refused to be despondent afterwards and praised his charges for their efforts.

The scoreboard looks bad but Im very proud of them, he said. They never dropped their heads. Fair play to them six hours on a bus yesterday, strange beds last night. You come to Clare and hopefully you learn from it.

ON THIS DAY

1964: Rugby league great Brian Bevan played his last match. He spent 17 years with Warrington before moving to Blackpool Borough. From 1946 onwards, he scored a record 796 tries. He died in 1991.

1979: Inverness Thistle and Falkirk's Scottish FA Cup tie was finally played - after being postponed a British record 29 times because of the weather. Falkirk won the second-round tie 4-0.

1991: Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish announced his unexpected resignation after his team's 4-4 FA Cup draw with Everton. Dalglish was to return to football a few months later, taking charge of Blackburn.

2003: Shane Warne was banned from cricket for a year - ruling him out of the World Cup - after he tested positive for banned diuretics.

2009: Cushendall's All-Ireland hopes ended in heartbreaking fashion as they lost to De la Salle after extra-time.

2010: Former Great Britain hooker Terry Newton had his contract terminated by Wakefield after admitting using human growth hormone, and was banned from all rugby for two years by UK Anti-Doping. In September 2010 Newton was found hanged at his home.

2014: Ulster University were unable to claim the Sigerson Cup after falling to UCC at the Dub.

2015: Paul Shiels top scored for Antrim as they lost to Limerick by eight points in the National Hurling League.

2019: Chelsea were placed under a transfer ban by FIFA for two windows and fined 600,000 Swiss francs (over 460,000) for breaching rules on the international transfer and registration of players under the age of 18. The ban was later reduced to one window and the fine was halved after an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
