Dr. Jerome Edelstein, Head of the Division of Plastic Surgery at the Humber River Hospital, recently visited the Allergan research and development facility in California to inspect the quality of breast implants in the Natrelle line. While in California, he also attended the Allergan Academy Plastic Surgery Symposium in Santa Barbara, where he served on the Medical Advisory Panel.

As a plastic surgeon who performs hundreds of breast augmentation procedures annually, it is crucial that I ensure that the quality of breast implants used are safe for my patients, states Dr. Edelstein, primary plastic surgeon at Edelstein Cosmetic.

Dr. Edelstein was selected to serve on the Medical Advisory Panel because of his commitment to aesthetic medicine and outstanding professional reputation as a plastic surgeon.

Serving on Allergans Medical Advisory Panel is a wonderful opportunity, Dr. Edelstein says. With our medical guidance, we can help advance the field of aesthetic plastic surgery, making it safer and more effective for patients around the world.

One recommendation that Dr. Edelstein gave last year has been put into implementation.

Takeover Attempt By Valeant

Allergan spends about $1.5 billion on research and development. After visiting the Santa Barbara facility and seeing the products they are working on, I think its a big mistake for Valeant to take over Allergan and get rid of its research and development division, one of the cost-saving measures they plan to execute, Dr. Edelstein opines. Montreal-based Valeant Pharmaceutical International Inc. is currently attempting to purchase Allergan, according to a Globe and Mail report published on May. 12 2014.

Allergan is a world leader in cosmetic breast devices, manufacturing Natrelle cohesive silicone gel and saline breast implants, as well as the leading injectables, Botox and Juvederm.
