United star Darren Fletcher provided some festive cheer for poorly children after dropping in with a cheque for 7,000.

The Reds midfielder visited Royal Manchester Childrens Hospital to hand over the cash to patients on its Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) day case unit.

The money will fund the purchase of entertainment and educational equipment to amuse and help with education of the children during their sometimes prolonged hospital visits.

Darrens visit to the Childrens Hospital represents the successful outcome of the 2014 United for Colitis charity fundraising gala dinner held earlier in the year at Uniteds Old Trafford stadium.

The Scottish star has been lucky enough to beat ulcerative colitis and is now fully recovered, but he said he is keen to help others with these debilitating, often hidden, bowel conditions.

The United for Colitis event saw Darren sharing his story with ex-England rugby union captain Lewis Moody, another top sportsman with ulcerative colitis.

United for Colitis is a new charity that raises funds for the patient charity, Crohns and Colitis UK.

As part of their promise to support people in Manchester with IBD, todays donation will support the IBD Day Case Unit to buy entertainment and educational equipment for the units young patients, many of whom will require surgery and long stays in hospital.

Darren said: United for Colitis is a fantastic opportunity to support a charity that helps an estimated 300,000 people in the UK with the increasingly common inflammatory bowel diseases, together known as Crohns and colitis.
