Cerebral palsy is not a disease but a condition caused by a delay in the development of brain and can be managed effectively by timely intervention and physiotherapy, said Elizabeth Cherian Paramesh, director, community service, Rotary Club of Bangalore, here on Saturday.

She was addressing the participants of a walkathon which was held to raise awareness on the issue. The event to mark National Cerebral Palsy Day on October 3 was flagged off by Governor H.R. Bhardwaj at Raj Bhavan.

Dr. Cherian also pointed out that although cerebral palsy did not have any treatment, early diagnosis could help in managing the chronic condition.

There is a need for parents, teachers and the society to accept their condition and focus on providing them education, she added.

According to M.S. Mahadevaiah, development paediatrician, Spastics Society of Karnataka, the condition is caused due to a damage in the part of the brain that is responsible for movement.

Krishna Kumar, 25, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth participated in the walkathon and said that people need to accept the challenge and make a mark in their lives.
