16-year-old with cerebral palsy crosses Cloud City Challenge finish line in Leadville – OutThere Colorado

Chase McGee, a 16-year-old boy with cerebral palsy, crossed the finish line at the Cloud City Challenge course in Leadville earlier this month.

Chase is a Sophomore at Monte Vista High School and a rookie member of the San Luis Valley Rattlers mountain bike team. While Chase cannot compete in regular high school cycling league events, he didnt let that stop him from fulfilling his dreams.

On Sunday, September 8, 2019, Chase crossed the finish line in his 7-speed adult trike at 10,151 feet with coach Brian Stevenson by his side.

Chase can be seen in the video below with a smile on his face as the crowd cheers. Chases mother says, he felt extremely proud to cross the finish line just like everyone else.

It was a special moment for the two, who train twice a week with the high school cycling league the San Luis Valley Rattlers, a mountain bike team open to high school girls and boys in the San Luis Valley. With the help of Team Director Larry Roberts, Head Coach Brian Stevenson, and race organizers, the course was shortened to about three-quarters of a mile, where Chase was able to start with all his teammates.

Chase is a middle child with two brothers, aged 10 and 23. He loves farming, being outside, and riding his bike. In spite of his struggles with cerebral palsy since birth, Chase remains positive and loves to bring laughter to others.

Its caused by abnormal development or damage in one or more parts of the brain that controls muscle movements. Symptoms range from mild to severe, including lack of muscle coordination and seizures, which typically appear during infancy and early childhood years.

Chase is an inspiration to his teammates, coaches, and the cycling community, and his story is one that can inspire many.
