The family of a talented swimmer and basketball player, who was born with cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair most of the time, has asked for approval of a new basketball net and court for his hometown.

Aspatria Town Council agreed to the request from the parents of Sam Wilson, however decided it would not be able to fund the works.

Over the years, the family has helped to raise funds for different causes and help to fund new equipment for the basketball player.

It has previously raised money for the court and wanted approval this time.

Aspatria councillors all agreed the council would not be able to fund the 2,000 needed to make the improvements but came to the conclusion it would be able to apply for funding to pay for the what was needed.

Councillors were all in agreement to help find the funding so the improvements could be made to the courts which will include a tennis court.

In the past, Sam's brother cycled the 130-mile Coast to Coast route in just eight hours to help raise funds for her new wheelchair.

Sam, from Aspatria, was born with cerebral palsy.

She is confined to a wheelchair the vast majority of the time - but the one she has no longer meets her needs and is holding her back.

But thanks to the support of the Cumbrian community, she has not only reached her total in less than six months and received her brand new chair in time for Christmas.

At the time Sam said she cant thank everyone enough. Its amazing. I actually feel like a person now and not just a wheelchair, she said.
