Cottage Cardiology Center Achieves Heart Procedure Milestone – Noozhawk

Posted: Published on May 12th, 2017

Posted on May 11, 2017 | 11:40 a.m. The Cottage Heart and Vascular Center at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital recently reached a milestone for advanced cardiology care by successfully using the TAVR procedure to treat 100 patients more than any other health system on the Central Coast. TAVR is the first non-surgical procedure for the replacement of the aortic valve. In less than two years, we have helped 100 patients who otherwise would not have been able to receive treatment because of the high risks associated with open heart surgery, said Dr. Joseph Aragon, interventional cardiologist on the TAVR team. The number of people we have helped has exceeded the expectations we had when we completed our first TAVR in September 2015, said Dr. Aragon, who also is medical director of the Structural Heart Program. In the United States, 1.5 million people suffer from aortic stenosis, a serious medical condition where the aortic valve begins to narrow, reducing blood flow from the aorta to the rest of the body. This can cause shortness of breath, dizziness and heart failure. The standard treatment is an aortic valve replacement. However, many patients, especially the elderly, are not able to have open-heart surgery … Continue reading

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology (ASNC) agreed today to work together to improve medical care for patients suffering from cardiovascular diseases worldwide. More people die globally due to heart diseases than any other single cause. The two parties signed a practical arrangement to step up training of health professionals in low- and middle- income countries in using nuclear techniques to diagnose and assess the extent of heart disease in patients. They will jointly develop interactive educational materials for the IAEAs Human Health Campus, an online resource visited monthly by over 5,000 health professionals. ASNC will also make its experts available for advisory missions and training courses as part of IAEA Technical Cooperation activities. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases kill more than 17.5 million people annually, accounting for 31 per cent of global deaths. Low- and middle income countries face the highest burden, with more than 75 per cent of these deaths. The epidemic proportions go hand-in-hand with an upsurge in risk factors, including obesity, low physical activity and poor diet. The practical arrangement increases educational opportunities for professionals in nuclear cardiology, said Diana Paez, Head of Nuclear Medicine and … Continue reading
