Michigan cardiology partnership celebrates 20 years – Cardiovascular Business

Posted: Published on May 5th, 2017

A Blue Cross Blue Shield cardiology collaborative in Michigan, designed to improve care and outcomes for heart patients, is celebrating two decades of existence. Called the Blue Cross Blue Shield Cardiovascular Consortium (BMC2), the group was created in 1997. It began as a collaboration between five hospitals in Michigan, but now includes all non-federal hospitals in the state, according to a press release from Ann Arbor-based University of Michigan Medicine, one of the health systems involved in the group. We are able to compare outcomes and processes across hospitals to openly explore what is working well and where institutions can learn from each other, said Hitinder Gurm, MD, a University of Michigan Medicine interventional cardiologist who leads BMC2 and runs the percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) registry, in a statement. Our goal is to create a culture of safety, reduce complications, improve appropriateness and share best practices so that all patients across the state will benefit. Over the years, the collaboration has proven it improves outcomes at the facilities involved. There was a 41 percent decrease in post-procedure blood transfusions and a 10 percent decrease in kidney complications. Additionally, data from BMC2 has resulted in 65 studies and many presentations at … Continue reading

Cardiology quality collaborative celebrates 20 years of improvements – University of Michigan Health System News (press release)

Posted: Published on April 30th, 2017

An effort to improve quality of care and outcomes for heart patients is marking two decades of statewide collaboration. The Blue Cross Blue Shield Cardiovascular Consortium, or BMC2, was created in 1997, and has since inspired additional initiatives in other specialty areas. The percutaneous coronary intervention registry started as a collaboration of five hospitals and has now expanded to include all non-federal hospitals in the state. In the past 20 years, it has collected data from more than 400,000 PCI cases performed at 48 hospitals. We are able to compare outcomes and processes across hospitals to openly explore what is working well and where institutions can learn from each other, says Hitinder Gurm, M.D., a Michigan Medicine interventional cardiologist who leads BMC2 and runs the PCI registry. Our goal is to create a culture of safety, reduce complications, improve appropriateness and share best practices so that all patients across the state will benefit. Gurm, also associate chief of cardiovascular medicine at Michigan Medicines Frankel Cardiovascular Center and a member of U-Ms Institute for Healthcare Policy and Innovation, said the positive competition improves outcomes at each facility. Results include a 41 percent decrease in post-procedure blood transfusions and 10 percent decrease … Continue reading

Cardiology vendor to pay $2.5M for HIPAA violation – Health Data Management

Posted: Published on April 27th, 2017

CardioNet, a vendor of ambulatory cardiac monitoring products, has paid a $2.5 million fine and will implement a 2-year corrective action plan under a settlement agreement with the Office for Civil Rights of the Department of Health and Human Services, which enforces the HIPAA privacy and security rules. The sanction follows the 2012 theft of a laptop from an employees car that compromised the security of electronic protected health information for 1,391 individuals. OCRs investigation, according to the agency, found that CardioNet had poor risk analysis and risk management processes in place at the time of the theft; policies and procedures to comply with the security rule still were in draft form and had not been implemented, the enforcement agency contends. In its investigation, OCR further learned that CardioNet, now a part of BioTelemetry, had no final policies or procedures to implement safeguards for protected information, including those for mobile devices. Also See: Why OCR is turning up the heat on business associates CardioNet failed to implement the specifications required to establish a security management process to prevent, detect, contain and correct security violations, OCR noted in the resolution agreement. The company, OCR added, did not have processes governing receipt … Continue reading
