It was revealed tonight that the abducted five-year-old April Jones has cerebral palsy and is in desperate need of regular medical treatment. Aprils godmother, Mair Raftree, said the girl suffers from cerebral palsy and will be in desperate need of her daily medication. "This is the third day April is away from her home and she is only little. She needs medication for her health problems and without it she will be in pain," she told the Daily Mail. April's mother Coral broke down as she made a desperate televised plea today. Sobbing, she said, said: 'It's been 36 hours since April was taken from us. 'There must be someone out there who knows where she is and can help the police find her. We are desperate for any news. 'April is only five years old. Please, please, help find her.' Mrs Jones' moving appeal follows a statement last night when her and her husband Paul said: Last night our lives were shattered when our beautiful little girl April, who was playing with friends, was taken from us. Charity step in to help Irvine family

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Oct 26 2012 by Lorraine Howard, Irvine Herald An Irvine family had to call in for help from The Sick Childrens Trusts Home from Home accommodation when their daughter, who suffers from cerebral palsy, took ill on holiday. Mum Fiona Dever tells her story. Unless it happens to you, or someone close to you, you may not realise how vital a service a charity such as The Sick Childrens Trust provides. We are fortunate in the UK to have free health care at the point of need, but there are so many financial and practical implications when your child becomes sick that go beyond medicine and medical treatment. Our daughter, Gracie, was born in 2011 with cerebral palsy, and this has led to her needing a lot of intensive input from doctors and therapists in her young life, including several hospital stays. We are a little unusual as a family because Gracies dad, John, also has cerebral palsy; although this is a coincidence as the condition cannot be inherited. We were in Filey, North Yorkshire, on our first family holiday since Gracie had been born, and a day or two before arriving, Gracie was pronounced fit to travel. However, on … Continue reading

Rock Hill house rehab offers greater independence for man living with cerebral palsy

ROCK HILL Wayne Moreland knows a miracle when he sees one. At 26 years old, he is one, hell tell you. Someone some people would say it was God, others would say doctors performed a miracle on Wayne when he was a teenager on a surgeons table at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville. He had surgery to correct a collapsing spine an operation no one would touch at first because it was unlikely he would survive the procedure. Wayne was born with cerebral palsy a disease of the nervous system that has no cure. He was born with his arms and legs and nearly every inch of his body tightened up into a fist-like ball. Doctors told his mother that Wayne who entered the world weighing just 2 pounds, 3 ounces would never sit up or walk and that he might not live. Treatments for cerebral palsy patients have just one goal: to give people such as Wayne as much independence as possible. Every day for the Morelands is a miracle. Now, the city of Rock Hill, Wayne says, is giving him another miracle. His home on Stonewall Court is part of the citys home rehabilitation program which … Continue reading

Walkathon to mark Cerebral Palsy Day

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2012

Cerebral palsy is not a disease but a condition caused by a delay in the development of brain and can be managed effectively by timely intervention and physiotherapy, said Elizabeth Cherian Paramesh, director, community service, Rotary Club of Bangalore, here on Saturday. She was addressing the participants of a walkathon which was held to raise awareness on the issue. The event to mark National Cerebral Palsy Day on October 3 was flagged off by Governor H.R. Bhardwaj at Raj Bhavan. Dr. Cherian also pointed out that although cerebral palsy did not have any treatment, early diagnosis could help in managing the chronic condition. There is a need for parents, teachers and the society to accept their condition and focus on providing them education, she added. According to M.S. Mahadevaiah, development paediatrician, Spastics Society of Karnataka, the condition is caused due to a damage in the part of the brain that is responsible for movement. Krishna Kumar, 25, who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth participated in the walkathon and said that people need to accept the challenge and make a mark in their lives. It's been brilliant," she said. Natalie is now stepping up research into where Georgia might go to receive the procedure which is currently provided in Germany or America. The cost is the same in both countries but Natalie is trying to get in contact with people from the UK who have been treated at either facility to hear their experiences and decide where would be best for Georgia. Therapy pool helps boy, others with disabilities

Posted: Published on October 15th, 2012

A dip in the pool is more than playtime for 12-year-old Jared Smith. Aquatic therapy is one of several types of treatment Jared gets regularly for his cerebral palsy. "Jared cant really jump, but in the water he can and just seems to enjoy things that he otherwise cant do, its wonderful," said Jareds mother, Marie. Jareds sessions take place in the new United Cerebral Palsy of Tampa Bay Therapy Pool. The pool is used just for therapy and is available only to people with disabilities. "A family with a child with special needs has difficulty taking their child to a public pool, so this gives them the opportunity to be able to work on their own skills. It also provides the family with instruction," said Physical Therapist Assistant, Becky Westney. In the pool, Westney has access to a variety of specialized equipment that are made just for this type of therapy. And something you wont see at other pools is a hydraulic lift that helps children in and out of the pool safely. Jareds mother is thankful to have access to this pool and hopes it will help her son progress more. The rest is here: Therapy pool helps … Continue reading

Buy photos The rain did not dampen the spirit of those on the Midnight Walk. s THE SECOND birthday of Georgia Almquest, the Bromsgrove girl who has cerebral palsy, will be celebrated tomorrow (Saturday) with a fund-raising party for the Hope for Georgia campaign. The drive is aimed at raising 20,000 to send her to America for specialist stem cell treatment which will improve her quality of life and, doctors say, provide the only chance of her being able to walk. And Georgias dream birthday present is getting ever closer - it is thought the total raised for the campaign so far, including money yet to be handed in, is now more than 10,000. A nine-mile Midnight Walk organised by Claire Bruce from the Castle Nursery, which took place last Friday (October 5), saw more than 50 people take part. Claire told The Standard the event, despite horrible weather conditions, went incredibly well. It hammered down with rain the whole time, but there was a fantastic atmosphere. None of the 50 who took part let the weather dampen their spirits. Georgias mum Natalie said: Id like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in the Midnight … Continue reading
