Research Centers ChemAdvising Dr. Edwin Rivera Receives USAID Award Dr. Edwin Rivera has received a three year, $151,097 award from the National Academy of Sciences (USAID) US-Egypt Joint Fund. The title of the project is: Porous-Organic Polymers for CO2 Capture Applications: Structure-Property Relationships through Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Dr. Rivera is the American PI and Dr. Mohamed Alkordi is the Egyptian PI in Zewail City of Science and Technology in Cairo. Dr. Alkordi is one of our own graduates (from Dr. Mohammed Eddaudis lab in 2010). Dr. Jacqueline Fries to Receive Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Award Dr. Jacqueline Fries (who graduated from Dr. Bill Bakers lab) has been selected to receive a 2016 Outstanding Thesis and Dissertation Award. The selection process is extremely competitive and the selection committee was very impressed with not only the theme of Dr. Fries research, but also the extent of her professional development. The award will be presented at the Scholars of Excellence event at USF, which is being planned for Monday, October 3, 2016 at 2 pm in the Marshall Center Ballroom. Shelby Hall, home of the UA Department of Chemistry Welcome to the University of Alabama Department of Chemistry, a division of the College of Arts and Sciences. As one of the original six disciplines taught at the University, we trace our roots back to the institutions founding in 1831. Today, we are a growing program that produces world-class research and offers bachelors, masters, and doctoral degree programs. We have 26 full-time faculty, nearly 100 graduate students, and nearly 200 undergraduate majors. We are based in Shelby Hall, a state-of-the-art facility for our research, teaching, and administrative functions. Within Shelby, we maintain a wide range of instrumentation in specialized research facilities for nuclear magnetic resonance, electron paramagnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and X-ray diffraction. Modern glassblowing, electronics, and machine shops provide rapid, on-site equipment maintenance and the capability to create custom-designed apparatus. The Department of Chemistry is pleased to announce that Alanna Schepartz has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of the ACS peer-reviewed journal Biochemistry. She joins William Jorgensen, who has been editor-in-chief of the ACS journal Journal of Chemical Theory and Computation since 2005. ACS is honored that Dr. Schepartz will bring her unparalleled expertise to bear as she takes the helm at Biochemistry, says James Milne, Ph.D., senior vice president, Journals Publishing Group, ACS Publications. Its an exciting time for the Department of Chemistry at Washington State University; grant support is now over $4 million dollars, an increase of more than 40% in the last 5 years, and we are rapidly growing the number of tenure-track faculty, undergraduate majors, and Ph.D. students. Research is at the forefront of our success, and we are dedicated to providing the facilities and support necessary for major advancements in fundamental and applied science within our three departmental focus areas. The Chemistry Department has grown to 26 tenure/tenure-track faculty positions with 4 additional instructional faculty.
