Multiple sex partners foster drug dependency

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2013

Wellington, Feb 26 (IANS) Young adults having multiple sex partners are at greater odds of developing alcohol or drug dependency and they breed social disorders, reveals a New Zealand research. The findings from Otago University which emerge from the long-running Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health & Development study show that the odds of substance disorders were much higher for young women. Substance disorder involves not only significant use of the substance but also impairment in social, occupational or recreational activities, the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour reports. Using data from the world-renowned study, tracking the health and behaviour of more than 1,000 people since their birth, in Dunedin in 1972-73, researchers examined how many sex partners the study members reported during three age periods (18-20 years, 21-25 years & 26-31 years). They then looked at data on their mental health immediately after each period (at ages 21 years, 26 years, and 32 years), including anxiety depression and substance dependence, according to an Otago statement. Sandhya Ramrakha from Otago, who led the study says: "This ruled out the possibility that men and women already had substance problems and that this had led to them having more sexual partners." Women who had 2.5 or … Continue reading

UCLA life scientists identify drug that could aid treatment of anxiety disorders

Posted: Published on February 21st, 2013

Public release date: 20-Feb-2013 [ | E-mail | Share ] Contact: Stuart Wolpert swolpert@support.ucla.edu 310-206-0511 University of California - Los Angeles The drug scopolamine has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including nausea and motion sickness. A new study by UCLA life scientists suggests that it may also be useful in treating anxiety disorders. Researchers found that the drug can help boost the effectiveness of a common treatment for anxiety disorders known as exposure therapy. In exposure therapy, a subject with a phobia or anxiety is repeatedly exposed to the object or situation they fear, in a non-threatening setting. The goal of this treatment is to ultimately lessen and eliminate the fear in essence, make it "extinct." However, fear-extinction memories formed during this type of therapy tend to be weak because they are tied to the non-dangerous context. Subjects have a tendency to relapse when they again encounter the source of their anxiety in a different environment. "Extinction has one Achilles heel that at present has not quite been pierced namely, extinction learning is highly dependent on the environment or context in which it occurs," said Michael Fanselow, a UCLA professor of psychology and the senior author of … Continue reading

York university's study into drugs work at prisons

York university's study into drugs work at prisons 8:56am Thursday 21st February 2013 in Education news New research led by the University of York will examine the success of work being done in a number of prisons to help prisoners recover from drug dependency. Drug recovery wings have been established in 11 prisons in England and Wales, including Askham Grange, near York, as dedicated areas designed to help prisoners give up their use of substances and prepare for social reintegration on release. The three-year study, which will include interviews with staff and prisoners, aims to assess what impact the wings have on prisoners drug or alcohol dependency and their impact on their re-offending. It will identify which wings are most successful and focus on therapeutic programmes and interventions which work best. Researchers will also collect information on the impact on prisons of having a wing focused on abstinence and recovery from drug and alcohol problems. The work is being done by researchers in the universitys Department of Health Sciences, in partnership with Centre for Drug Misuse Research in Glasgow and the University of Cambridge. Principal investigator Charlie Lloyd said: This important evaluation will compare the different approaches taken in selected … Continue reading

U.S. overdose deaths climbs for 11th straight year, driven by painkillers

Posted: Published on February 20th, 2013

Lindsey Tanner And Mike Stobbe, The Associated Press Published Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013 7:49AM EST CHICAGO -- Drug overdose deaths rose for the 11th straight year, federal data show, and most of them were accidents involving addictive painkillers despite growing attention to risks from these medicines. "The big picture is that this is a big problem that has gotten much worse quickly," said Dr. Thomas Frieden, head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which gathered and analyzed the data. In 2010, the CDC reported, there were 38,329 drug overdose deaths nationwide. Medicines, mostly prescription drugs, were involved in nearly 60 per cent of overdose deaths that year, overshadowing deaths from illicit narcotics. The report appears in Tuesday's Journal of the American Medical Association. It details which drugs were at play in most of the fatalities. As in previous recent years, opioid drugs -- which include OxyContin and Vicodin -- were the biggest problem, contributing to 3 out of 4 medication overdose deaths. Frieden said many doctors and patients don't realize how addictive these drugs can be, and that they're too often prescribed for pain that can be managed with less risky drugs. They're useful for cancer, "but if … Continue reading
