Published: 2/28/2013 9:30 PM | Last update: 3/1/2013 10:48 AM Sen. Jay Emler, R-Lindsborg, was one of two Republicans voting Thursday against drug-testing Senate Bill No. 149. It sailed through on a 31-8 vote. The bill goes to the House for consideration. "Many people from my district have asked me if legislation that required drug testing for welfare recipients could be brought forward in Kansas. I don't think taxpayers should be subsidizing drug addictions," Love said in a statement. "More importantly, I have seen the ill effects of those on welfare, who are fathers and mothers, who use the welfare money for drugs, and also how that negatively impacts their families. While some feel we are being passionate, some of our welfare policies are really promoting a culture of poverty," Love wrote. Drug screening can be ordered "when reasonable suspicion exists" that an applicant or recipient of cash aid is unlawfully using a controlled substance, the bill states. Opponents expressed concern during a prior committee hearing that state officials could presume welfare recipients were on drugs. Senate Majority Leader Terry Bruce said the legislation "provides the help and services those struggling with drug addiction need." For those failing the drug … Continue reading

STOCKS NEWS EUROPE-Lundbeck rises 3 pct after FDA drug approval

Posted: Published on March 1st, 2013

Danish drug firm Lundbeck (Copenhagen: LUN.CO - news) rises 3 percent after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approves its injectable form of Abilify, a treatment for schizophrenia to be sold with Japan's Otsuka. Lundbeck also outperforms a 0.4 percent gain on Denmark's benchmark OMX Copenhagen 20 equity index. The approval is the second small boost for the firm in two days after European regulators gave their nod for Lundbeck to start selling its new drug to for alcohol dependency. Analysts said both approvals were mostly priced in but the firm needs all the good news it can get as it fights falling sales because of generic competition, and heavy investments as it works to bring new products to the market. The stock fell to its lowest in over 12 years in December but has been rising steadily as investors consider it to be oversold given its promising pipeline of products. Sexual partners linked to drug use – study

Posted: Published on February 27th, 2013

Published: 11:57AM Wednesday February 27, 2013 Source: Fairfax Source: Supplied The more sex partners young women have, the more likely they are to become dependent on drugs and alcohol, says a new study. University of Otago researchers found young people in general were at greater odds of developing alcoholism and cannabis dependency the more sex partners they had - with the odds even greater for young women. The study tracked the health and behaviour of more than 1000 people from birth in Dunedin in 1972-73. Researchers looked at how many sex partners the study participants had during three age periods: 18-20, 21-25, and 26-31 years. They then looked at their mental health immediately after each period, including anxiety, depression, and substance dependence. The study's lead author, Dr Sandhya Ramrakha, said women who had 2.5 or more partners each year increased their odds of having a substance dependence disorder by up to 17 times. "This is a striking increase in the risk of substance disorder," said Ramrakha. "Furthermore, when we used a model to compare men and women who had more than 10-20 sex partners in the same periods, we found that these women were much more likely to have a … Continue reading

More sex partners linked to drug dependency

Wellington, February 27 (ANI): Having multiple sex partners put young people at greater odds of developing alcoholism and cannabis dependency, a new study led by an Indian origin scientist has found. University of Otago researchers said the odds were even greater for young women, Stuff.co.nz reported. The more sex partners young women have, the more likely they are to become dependent on drugs and alcohol, they said. As part of the study the researchers tracked the health and behaviour of more than 1000 people from birth in Dunedin in 1972-73. Further, when the researchers used a model to compare men and women who had more than 10-20 sex partners in the same periods, they found that these women were much more likely to have a substance disorder than the men. The strong link between the number of sex partners and substance disorders stayed even after taking into account pre-existing … Continue reading

Reckitt hurt as rivals steal heroin march

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2013

Shares in Reckitt Benckiser took a tumble yesterday on news that its competitors will be able to make heroin-dependency drugs to compete with the consumer goods group. Reckitt had been trying to slow down competitors' plans to make rival drugs after it lost US patent protection for its heroin-dependency treatment drug Suboxone in 2009. But yesterday investors reacted to news that the US Food and Drug Administration had rejected Reckitt's petition to force rivals to take more precautions with the drugs packaging. Reckitt's shares took a hit and ended 135p lower at 4,381p. Not only has Reckitt lost its plea, but two generic drug makers have been given the go-ahead to enter the Suboxone tablet market with drugs that contain its key buprenorphine ingredient. The Dettol-to-Durex maker introduced a film-strip version of Suboxone that is less likely to be taken accidentally by children. It will stop producing Suboxone in tablet form next month. It had hoped packaging for the opiate substitute would become regulated to make it more expensive for rivals to produce. But the FDA decided that data presented by Reckitt did not necessitate the regulation that the company had suggested, which had included educational campaigns and child-resistant packaging. … Continue reading

Reckitt Benckiser Says FDA Rejects Suboxone Safeguard Petition

Posted: Published on February 26th, 2013

Feb. 25 (Bloomberg) -- Reckitt Benckiser Group Plc faces competition in pharmaceuticals for the first time after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved two generic variants of its Suboxone heroin-dependency drug, thwarting the companys attempts to keep rivals away from its most profitable business. The company said today that two manufacturers have FDA approval to produce generic Suboxone tablets in the U.S. Competition could arrive within a month, according to Alex Howson, an analyst at Jefferies International in London. Reckitt Benckiser shares fell as much as 4.4 percent, also hurt by the FDAs rejection in a Feb. 22 letter of the companys September petition asking that makers of similar medicines implement more safeguards. The FDA also asked the Federal Trade Commission to look into claims by generic drug makers of anti- competitive business practices on Reckitt Benckisers part. The shadow of competition to Suboxone has hung over the Slough, England-based company since it lost U.S. patent protection in 2009. The pharmaceuticals unit generated 21 percent of profit last year, and analysts today reduced their 2013 profit estimates by as much as 4 percent. The market has been waiting for this news since October 2009, when Suboxones orphan drug status … Continue reading
