RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association Applauds Senator Murrays Introduction of the Women Veterans and …

McLean, VA (PRWEB) February 11, 2015 RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association applauds U.S. Senator Patty Murrays (D-WA) introduction of a bill that will allow the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) to provide reproductive services, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), to service members, veterans, and their families who have suffered catastrophic wounds of war that prevent them from starting families. The Women Veterans and Families Health Services Act of 2015 would expand the current fertility services offered to service members and their families by DoD, and end the ban on in vitro fertilization services at the VA. No one living with infertility should also have to face the burden of not being able to afford treatment, especially our veterans, said Barbara Collura, President/CEO, RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association. Those who put their own lives at risk and incur an injury that impacts their fertility need the resources to be able to have a family. A persons reproductive health, and treatment for it, is just as important as other health conditions. Though DoD can provide IVF treatment, too many service members are excluded from eligibility for this and other treatments. The VA is completely barred … Continue reading

Dumfries mother who lost her son to a rare genetic disorder defends new controversial IVF treatment

Posted: Published on February 7th, 2015

A mum who lost her son to a genetic disease has defended a controversial IVF treatment. Dumfries student nurse Beccy Foster believes MPs were right this week to permit the creation of babies with DNA from three people. The aim is to enable those with genetic disorders to have healthy children. Opponents claim it marks the start of a slippery slope towards designer babies. But Beccy, whose son Daniel McColm died of mitochondrial disease at five months, said: If these people had lost a child or family member through a disease like this they may feel differently about it. Its not about making designer babies. This is a terrible illness and the children born with it have a very low life expectancy. The treatment will give parents the chance to have a healthy baby and break the genetic chain. In a milestone for medical science, Britain is to become the first country in the world to allow the creation of so-called three-parent babies. MPs this week voted overwhelmingly in favour of the controversial technique three-person IVF babies to prevent some mitochondrial diseases being passed on in DNA. The law allowing the licensing of mitochondrial donation will come into effect in … Continue reading

‘It could have saved me losing seven children’

Posted: Published on February 3rd, 2015

ITV Report 3 February 2015 at 5:42am Sharon Bernardi lost six babies and her surviving son only lived until the age of 21. Credit: ITV News If pioneering IVF treatment, due to be debated in Parliament today, was around when Sharon Bernardi had her babies, her life could have been very different. Sharon had seven children, six of whom died before the age of two, after she passed on her damaged genes. Her son Edward, who she was told would not live beyond the age of five, survived until he was 21. But all her children suffered from Mitochondrial Disease, which means the cells in their bodies were not getting enough energy. There is still no cure for it and Sharon told ITV News how Edward would suffer spasms which left him crying for six hours at a time. She said: "You can't take away that pain. It's the worst." However, new IVF procedures have been developed which can substitute faulty genes passed on like mother's like Sharon for healthy ones before an egg is implanted in the womb. ITV Health Editor Rachel Younger reports: Last updated Tue 3 Feb 2015 Link: 'It could have saved me losing seven children' … Continue reading
