Bishops challenged over ‘three-parent’ IVF comments

Posted: Published on January 30th, 2015

THE research institute which funded North-East scientists pioneering development of treatment for serious inherited disease has challenged Church of England claims there has been insufficient scientific study into the technique. The intervention by Dr Jeremy Farrar, director of the Wellcome Trust, ahead of next Tuesdays free vote by MPs to change the law to allow so-called three-parent IVF treatment follows an appeal from the Bishops Conference of England to Wales to excercise caution. Bishop John Sherrington said: No other country has allowed this procedure and the international scientific community is not convinced that the procedure is safe and effective. But Dr Farrar, whose organisation has funded the Newcastle University team which developed the worlds first genetic treatment for carriers of mitochondrial diseases said: Mitochondrial donation raises important ethical questions on which the Church of England can be expected to take a view. "But it is remarkable that the Church has pronounced that there has been insufficient scientific study without first asking the Newcastle University scientists who lead this research, the families who stand to benefit, or the Wellcome Trust, which funds it, to explain the science to the Archbishops Council. The Church appears to have ignored the unprecedented independent scrutiny … Continue reading

‘Three-parent’ IVF could benefit thousands

Posted: Published on January 29th, 2015

RESEARCHERS have calculated that a controversial three parent IVF treatment developed in Newcastle could prevent thousands of women from passing on a life-threatening condition to their children. The research by the Wellcome Trust Centre for Mitochondrian Research at Newcastle University estimated that nearly 2,500 women of child-bearing age in the UK are at risk of transmitting mitochondrial disease to their children. The research, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, indicates how many families could potentially be helped by new IVF techniques to prevent mitochondrial disease. MPs are soon expected to be given a vote on whether the treatment can go-ahead Mitochondrial diseases are caused by inherited mutations in the DNA contained in mitochondria tiny structures present in every cell that generate energy. Mitochondrial diseases can be devastating and particularly affect tissues that have high energy demands brain, muscle, liver and kidney. Known as mitochondrial donation the new technique involves removing faulty mitochondria inherited from the mother and replacing them with the healthy mitochondria of another woman. The nuclear DNA, containing 99.9 per cent of genetic material from the mother and father, remains unchanged. The Newcastle researchers, including Professor Doug Turnbull, have calculated that 2,473 women in the UK, … Continue reading

The first cycle that started today will involve 30 couples, parliamentary secretary for health Chris Fearne said. Fearne said that the IVF services at Mater Dei enjoys close collaboration between Maltese professionals in the field and overseas embryologists. Over the last months a number of nurses and councillors undertook specialised training on topics related to infertility by the British Infertility Counselling Association, the only accredited association in this field in the United Kingdom. Bourn Hall clinic in Cambridge celebrates 2,000 babies born following NHS-funded treatment

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Comments(1) Baby Rocco is just one of the miracle stories being celebrated by a Cambridge fertility clinic, which has just announced more than 2,000 babies have been born following NHS-funded fertility treatment. Bourn Hall, which has clinics in Cambridge, Colchester and Norwich and has opened supportive satellite clinics in Peterborough and Wickford along with facilities in NHS hospitals in King's Lynn and Luton, was first awarded the East of England contract in 2009 along with four other providers. NHS funding has given couples such as Harika and Craig Marlow the chance of a family. The couple, who live in Cambridge, had been trying to conceive for 10 years before they were referred to Bourn Hall for IVF treatment. "We started avoiding certain social situations to make it easier, like children's birthday parties," said Harika. "People were always asking why we hadn't had children yet. We found the easiest thing to do was be honest and we were never embarrassed, but then the person you were talking to would get so embarrassed you'd almost find yourself apologising for having fertility problems." The couple were successful on their first cycle of IVF and baby Rocco was born on March 11 last year. … Continue reading

Use of Male IVF Procedure Doubled in the Past Decade

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2015

TUESDAY, Jan. 20, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Although use of an IVF treatment for male infertility, known as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), has doubled in the past decade, the procedure is not always associated with better outcomes, according to a new study from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During ICSI, a single sperm is injected directly into an egg. The procedure, which was introduced in 1992, made it possible for many infertile men to father children. "In the pre-ICSI days, couples with severe male infertility would frequently have to resort to donor insemination, thus eliminating the possibility of the man to be the genetic parent," explained one expert, Dr. Avner Hershlag, chief of the Center for Human Reproduction at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, N.Y. "There are now millions of children and adults whose fathers had deficient sperm, and it is because of ICSI that they have been created," said Hershlag, who was not involved in the new study. However, the CDC study authors said that unlike conventional in-vitro fertilization (IVF), ICSI is much more expensive. In conducting the study, the team of researchers, led by the CDC's Sheree Boulet, analyzed almost 1.4 million fresh IVF … Continue reading
