Starting IVF treatment can be an exciting but nerve wracking experience. Usually, IVF treatment is pursued once other treatments have failed, following months of trying to get pregnant unsuccessfully. IVF treatment is the very first treatment tried when an egg donor is being used, there are severe cases of male infertility or a woman's fallopian tubes are blocked. Still, this often comes after years of trying to get pregnant, followed by a slew of fertility testing. IVF treatment is often successful, though, it may take more than one try. Studies show that the potential for success with IVF treatment is the same for up to four cycles. Generally, the live birth rate for each IVF cycle is 30 to 35% for women under age 35, 25% for women between the ages of 35 and 37, 15 to 20% for women between the ages of 38 and 40 and 6 to 10% for women after age 40. (When an egg donor is used, however, success rates remain high even at age 40, with a 45% success rate.) If you're feeling overwhelmed, don't feel bad. IVF treatment is quite stressful. Useful information on IVF treatment, covering the procedure used for embryo development, pregnancy success rates and related ethical issues involved. The technique was developed in the United Kingdom by Doctors Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards. The first so-called "test-tube baby", Louise Brown, was born as a result on July 25, 1978 amid intense controversy over the safety and morality of the procedure. The first successful IVF treatment in the US took place in 1981, and there have been 45,000 babies born with the aid of IVF treatment since then. In brief, the process involves removing ova (eggs) from the woman's body and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium. The fertilised eggs are then transferred to the mother's uterus where normal development occurs. IVF is used commonly when the father's sperm count is low or the woman's fallopian tubes are blocked. Ovulation induction agents, such as Pergonal are usually given to the mother 8-10 days before treatment, as they allow larger numbers of eggs to be recovered, improving the chances of a successful fertilisation. Before the development of such drugs few eggs would be retrieved because it required careful monitoring of the mother's 'LH surge' in order to recover … Continue reading

PA WIRE/Ben Birchall The Ontario Liberals announced new funding to help women conceive through in vitro fertilization (IVF), a decision that was welcomed by families struggling with infertility. Health Minister Deb Matthews made the announcement on Thursday morning, saying that while she didnt know the exact cost, Ontario is expected to pay out $50 million annually if the program is fully implemented. As of next year, the government is proposing to contribute to the costs of one cycle of IVF treatment per patient for all forms of infertility. An advisory panel will determine how much each couple will receive as well as who is eligible. This is a huge step forward for infertile couples in Ontario, a spokesperson for Conceivable Dreams, which calls itself the OHIP for IVF Coalition, said in a statement. As a result of this policy, IVF treatments will be more accessible for the one in six Ontarians having challenges starting a family, co-founderJoanne Horibe said. With IVF costing as much as$10,000for a single cycle, not including travel and time off work, IVF is currently beyond the financial means … Continue reading

27-year-old's shock as IVF treatment reveals golf ball-sized cancer 10:55pm Friday 4th April 2014 in News LAURA Hodgkinson has good reason to be thankful that her IVF treatment in a bid to become pregnant had to be stopped. Doctors discovered a golf-ball-sized tumour and the 27-year-old had to endure intense radiotherapy and four courses of chemotherapy at The Christie hospital to treat her cervical cancer. She is now nearing the end of the treatment and her friends are organising a charity night to raise money for The Christie. Laura, of Bag Lane, Atherton, who is currently on sick leave from her job as a link worker at a Sure Start centre, said: I wanted to raise money for The Christie because they have been so great during my treatment but I also want to encourage other women to go for cervical screening. My besties, as I call them, have been amazing. I asked them for help while I was still ill and they have done everything I have asked to make this happen. Laura met her best friends Julianne Foster, Carla Grainey, Kerrie Lamb and Jennifer King when they all danced for the Hag Fold Morris Dancers. Julianne said: There … Continue reading
