Councillors vote to halve free IVF treatment available to Black Country couples

Posted: Published on October 8th, 2014

Sandwell councillors have voted to halve the number of free IVF cycles available on the NHS in the Black Country. Just one free cycle will now be offered in Sandwell, bringing the area into line with Birmingham. Councillors voted to impose the cut, to come into force in May 2016, after health chiefs said it was not a priority. That guidance contradicted research which showed almost half of patients, the public and health professionals wanted cycle numbers increased rather than reduced. Andrew Willians, of the Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group, said: The guidance we have been given is that we should not be committing to more than one cycle. We should prioritise supporting people returning from hospital to live independently. It is the right thing to do. But Coun Bob Lloyd (Lab, Wednesbury South), an opponent of the cuts proposal, told a Sandwell Council health scrutiny meeting: I think we should be raising the standard to Birmingham, not lowering it. When women were getting paid less than men, we didnt decide to pay men less we raised the womans wage. It is giving less to more. Free IVF treatment for Black Country couples to be halved by health bosses

Posted: Published on October 3rd, 2014

Health bosses have revealed controversial plans to halve the number of free rounds of IVF given to couples in the Black Country. Desperate couples living in Sandwell towns including West Bromwich, parts of Smethwick, Tipton, and Wednesbury, are usually granted two free cycles of treatment. But the organisation which commissions health services wants to reduce that to just one meaning would-be parents face forking out up to 5,000 for another round of IVF if the first one fails. The IVF cuts have been recommended by the Sandwell and West Birmingham Clinical Commissioning Group following a review of fertility services. If approved, the policy would bring the region in line with West Birmingham, which currently offers one free cycle to couples. A survey of health professionals, potential and past patients, members of the public and local politicians was carried out as part of the review. And figures revealed 48 per cent wanted to INCREASE the number of cycles offered, with 34 per cent endorsing a policy of one cycle per couple. Yet Dr Nick Harding, chairman of the commissioning group, said there was a clear recommendation that the number of treatment cycles offered should be one. He said: As a GP … Continue reading

Shady Grove Fertility Releases 22nd Annual IVF Program Report

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2014

Rockville, Maryland (PRWEB) October 01, 2014 Shady Grove Fertility has published its 22nd Annual IVF Program Report, a yearly compendium of practice milestones, discoveries, and outcomes. In 2013, Shady Grove Fertility performed its highest-ever number of in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles in a single year, leading to a record number of babies born. Shady Grove Fertility determines success in accordance with the Fertility Clinic Success Rate Reporting Act of 1992. As many pregnancies do not result in a live birth, the parameters of success must be properly defined. Thus, we believe that the truest measure of success is the rate of live births per embryo transfer. In 2013, over 6,700 autologous IVF treatment cycles were performed at Shady Grove Fertilitys Rockville, MD; Towson, MD; and Chesterbrook, PA offices - including both fresh IVF treatment and frozen embryo transfers (FETs). These cycles ultimately resulted in a 50 percent pregnancy rate per embryo transfer when accounting for all age groups, with women under 35 seeing the highest outcomes with an overall delivery rate per embryo transfer of 41 percent. The patient outcomes in our IVF Program have also been enhanced by the significant improvement in cryopreservation of frozen embryos. Cryopreservation has been … Continue reading

Lord Robert Winston: NHS ‘rips off’ couples for IVF treatment

Posted: Published on October 2nd, 2014

Fertility expert Lord Robert Winston blasted the NHS for ripping off childless couples while touring a Birmingham hospital on Wednesday. The scientist, renowned for his work in IVF, said the treatment should cost around 1,000 yet parents-in-waiting are being charged 5,000 to 6,000 per cycle. Speaking to the Birmingham Mail outside Birmingham Womens Hospital, in Edgbaston, the professor said: It is shocking that both the health service and private clinics are charging too much when it could be much cheaper and more effective. Success rates are not really improving by that much. We should be concentrating on academic medicine to improve more effective way of registering treatment. Its not fair that people have to re-mortgage their homes. The cost should be around 1,000, instead of the 5,000 to 6,000 it can end up costing. While visiting the hospital Lord Winston toured the clinic where Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) is carried out another one of his specialisms. PGD is where embryos are created by IVF and tested for conditions such as Cystic Fibrosis, B Thalassaemia or Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, so only healthy embryos are replaced. The Womens Hospital welcomed the first baby to be born after PGD at the end of … Continue reading
