Shady Grove Fertility has published its 22nd Annual IVF Program Report, a yearly compendium of practice milestones, discoveries, and outcomes. In 2013, Shady Grove Fertility performed its highest-ever number of in vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles in a single year, leading to a record number of babies born.

Shady Grove Fertility determines success in accordance with the Fertility Clinic Success Rate Reporting Act of 1992. As many pregnancies do not result in a live birth, the parameters of success must be properly defined. Thus, we believe that the truest measure of success is the rate of live births per embryo transfer. In 2013, over 6,700 autologous IVF treatment cycles were performed at Shady Grove Fertilitys Rockville, MD; Towson, MD; and Chesterbrook, PA offices - including both fresh IVF treatment and frozen embryo transfers (FETs). These cycles ultimately resulted in a 50 percent pregnancy rate per embryo transfer when accounting for all age groups, with women under 35 seeing the highest outcomes with an overall delivery rate per embryo transfer of 41 percent.

The patient outcomes in our IVF Program have also been enhanced by the significant improvement in cryopreservation of frozen embryos. Cryopreservation has been performed for 30 years, but the use of vitrification technology has now made frozen embryo transfers as successful as fresh IVF cycles. Approximately 55 percent of women under 38 have high-quality embryos to freeze for subsequent cycles, making care available at a lower cost with less invasive treatment.

The increased rate of fresh IVF cycles and FETs has also led to an increase in patient education regarding the risks of multiple births. Based on empirical data, physicians encourage good prognosis patients to choose elective single embryo transfer (eSET) in order to reduce the potential risks associated with multiple births. The pregnancy outcomes for patients transferring one embryo are nearly identical to those patients who transfer multiple embryos. The one significant difference is that the risk of twins drops from 43 percent to a mere 1 percent. By cautioning good prognosis patients about the complications involved with multiple pregnancies, the rate of patients selecting eSET in our practice is five times higher than the national rate. In 2013, approximately 80 percent of all pregnant patients in the IVF Program achieved a singleton pregnancy, largely by choosing eSET.

At Shady Grove Fertility, we continue to adapt and modify our treatment options to serve our patients in the best possible way. By continuing to fine-tune treatment protocols and optimizing technology, we offer our patients world-class fertility care. We appreciate the opportunity to have helped so many individuals build their families and are proud to have had 2,800 babies born through our IVF Program in 2013, said Dr. Michael Levy of the Rockville, MD office.
