The Cycle Before IVF (In Vitro Fertilization) Treatment

Posted: Published on August 28th, 2014

Originally published August 28, 2008. Updated May 19, 2014. Written or reviewed by a board-certified physician. See About.com's Medical Review Board. The cycle before your IVF treatment is scheduled, you may be put on birth control pills. This may seem backward -- aren't you trying to get pregnant? Actually, though, using birth control pills before a treatment cycle has been shown to decrease your risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and ovarian cysts and may even improve the odds of success. Another possible option your doctor may ask you to look out for is going by your ovulation (either by basal body temperature charting or with an ovulation predictor kit). Let your doctor know as soon as you detect ovulation. Sometime after ovulation, the fertility clinic may then have you start taking a GnRH antagonist or a GnRH agonist, such as Lupron. This is so they can have complete control over ovulation once your treatment cycle begins. Another possibility, if you rarely get cycles on your own, is taking progesterone, such as Provera, to bring on your period. In this case, your doctor will probably ask that you start taking the GnRH agonist or antagonist about six days or more after … Continue reading

In vitro fertilisation – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Posted: Published on August 24th, 2014

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is a process by which an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the body: in vitro ("in glass"). The process involves monitoring and stimulating a woman's ovulatory process, removing ovum or ova (egg or eggs) from the woman's ovaries and letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium in a laboratory. The fertilised egg (zygote) is cultured for 26 days in a growth medium and is then implanted in the same or another woman's uterus, with the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy. IVF techniques can be employed in a variety of situations. It is a method of assisted reproductive technology for treatment of infertility. IVF techniques are also employed in gestational surrogacy, in which case the fertilised egg is implanted into a surrogate's uterus, and the resulting child is genetically unrelated to the surrogate. In some cases, donated eggs or sperms may be used. Some countries ban or otherwise regulate the availability of IVF treatment, giving raise to fertility tourism. Restrictions on availability of IVF include to single females, to lesbians and to surrogacy arrangements. Due to the costs of the procedure, IVF is generally attempted only after less expensive options have failed. The first … Continue reading

Health bosss conflict on IVF

Posted: Published on August 21st, 2014

A YORK health boss has explained why he did not vote in a crucial decision over IVF - and has said he will oppose such a postcode lottery if elected as MP. Dr Mark Hayes, chief clinical officer of the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), has publicly said he wishes to end a situation in which York is the only area in the country not to offer IVF. But he did not cast a vote in favour of providing IVF treatment after governing members of the CCG suggested the Labour candidate for Selby and Ainsty may be seen to be playing for votes. A narrow 5-4 vote then saw commissioners backtrack on a decision to allow a cycle of IVF because it cannot afford the service. Dr Hayes yesterday dismissed calls from Conservative MP Julian Smith for his resignation due to a conflict of interest, saying he did not anticipate that another situation would arise where he would have to abstain from a vote or decision-making process. But he did add that he will campaign against the injustice of a postcode lottery should he become an MP. Dr Hayes said: We have a National Health Service and its … Continue reading

New fury in York IVF row

New fury in York IVF row Updated 6:19pm Tuesday 19th August 2014 in News By Kate Liptrot A YORK health boss is facing calls to resign after it emerged he did not vote in a crucial decision over IVF because he is campaigning as a Labour election candidate. Dr Mark Hayes has come under pressure to reconsider his work on the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group after it emerged the chief clinical officer could not cast a vote in favour of providing IVF treatment due to his political work. The Labour candidate for Selby and Ainsty has previously said he wishes to end a situation in which his CCG is the only one in the whole of the UK not to offer IVF. Despite announcing it would provide a single cycle of the fertility treatment IVF, the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) backtracked on the decision earlier this month on a narrow 5-4 vote, deciding to delay plans because it cannot afford the service. The matter has been raised by Skipton and Ripon Julian Smith, who said the best outcome would be for Dr Hayes to step down from the post until the 2015 General Election is … Continue reading

Petition launched against IVF lottery

Petition launched against IVF lottery Updated 10:55am Friday 15th August 2014 in News By Kate Liptrot A CAMPAIGN has been launched against a decision which has made York the only area in the UK not to fund fertility treatment. Despite announcing it would provide a single cycle of the fertility treatment IVF, the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) backtracked on the decision earlier this month on a 5-4 vote, deciding to delay plans because it cannot afford the service. Now the support group York Fertility Network has launched a petition against the "postcode lottery" and is calling for York to bring its policy in line with the rest of the UK. The petition is due to be presented to the Vale of York CCG. Karen Boardman, a member of the York Fertility Network who is due to undergo IVF treatment, said: "The whole situation is a disgrace. To have given hope to so many couples across York and then snatched it away is simply wrong. "They have also said that it will cost 2 million to offer 110 people one cycle of IVF. This is absurd. The IVFYes campaign's research says on average it costs 3,434.70 per person … Continue reading

Some Ryedale couples will not get IVF treatment on NHS

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2014

Some Ryedale couples will not get IVF treatment on NHS 12:01pm Wednesday 13th August 2014 in Ryedale news By Karen Darley COUPLES in some parts of Ryedale will not be able to get IVF treatment on the NHS this year after health bosses said they could not afford the service. In a narrow vote, the Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Groups Governing Body, which met on Thursday, decided to delay the commissioning of IVF services for 2014/15. The decision will affect patients registered with GP practices in Helmsley, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Terrington. Dr Tim Hughes, GP member of the Governing Body, said the group had made the decision with a heavy heart. The commissioning of IVF services carries a great element of financial risk for the CCG and with prevalence data highlighting that approximately 110 couples a year will come forward for IVF treatment, the cost pressure could be as much as 2m per year, he said. To put this into perspective, in a year, 2m equates to either two fully-staffed and operational hospital wards, 293 major hip replacements, treatment for more than 21,500 average attendances at accident and emergency departments or 43 qualified nurses employed full-time for a year. … Continue reading

7:39am, Mon 11 Aug 2014 Last updated Mon 11 Aug 2014 Holby City star Rosie Marcel has described the "amazing" moment she discovered she was pregnant two days before she was due to start IVF treatment. The actress and her husband Ben Stacey turned to IVF after a miscarriage nine months ago. She told Hello! Magazine: "It was an amazing feeling, crazy. Literally 48 hours before I started injections, I was pregnant. "I had done so many pregnancy tests during the eight months we'd been trying hard for a baby that I fully expected it to come back negative as it always did." The 37-year-old star had gone through the pain of the miscarriage at the same time as her character, Doctor Jac Naylor, was giving birth on screen in the hospital drama. A nine-year-old boy born without ears has being given a new set by surgeons. They used cartilage from his ribs to create them. Clifford Hartland died on at the age of 101, and his 97-year-old wife Marjorie passed away just 14 hours later. Today we have been with Kurdish Peshmerga near Irbil, where forces are keeping watch on Islamic State fighters just 500 metres away. Original post: … Continue reading
