Stigma still associated with IVF: survey

Posted: Published on August 10th, 2014

PAA Almost half of Australian women believe that if they need IVF treatment, they've failed. Nearly one in two Australian women believes there's a common perception that you have "failed" if you seek IVF treatment, according to a survey. Despite an increasing number of babies being born from fertility procedures each year - currently about 12,000 - research by fertility clinic Bump found 85 per cent of women feel there's a social stigma associated with having in vitro fertilisation treatment. Nearly half of the 1007 women aged 25 to 44 surveyed say this is due to the perception that undergoing IVF treatment means you have "failed". Added to this, 32 per cent believe the stigma is because women can feel responsible and guilty even when it's their partner who has the fertility problem. Anne-Marie Pickard, 46, who had her son five years ago through IVF, said she can understand why many couples, and women in particular, would feel they've failed if they need IVF. "There's probably a little bit in my subconscious brain that feels that I failed because I didn't fall pregnant naturally," Ms Pickard said. "But consciously I know that's not the case." Ms Pickard says she has … Continue reading

U-turn on IVF decision deals bitter blow to childless couples 4:45pm Friday 8th August 2014 in News By Emily Flanagan, Reporter HEALTH bosses have backtracked on a decision announced earlier this year to offer IVF treatment on the NHS to couples in York. The Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) had announced in June that it had agreed a criteria for treatment. It is currently the only place in the UK not to offer at least one cycle of IVF to childless couples who cannot conceive naturally. But this week the organisations governing body met and voted to defer offering a single cycle of IVF, as it cannot afford the cost. Dr Tim Hughes, from the CCG, said they had passed a motion to aspire to commission IVF in the future. He said: It is with a heavy heart that I announce the CCGs governing body has voted temporarily to defer the commissioning of IVF services in the Vale of York for 2014-15. There are approximately 110 couples in the area wanting IVF, but Dr Hughes said the service could cost as much as 2m a year to provide. IVF reduction for women under 40 7:00am Monday 4th August 2014 in News By Katie Mansfield WOMEN in their twenties and thirties wanting IVF treatment in Castle Point and Rochford will only get two rounds of the treatment, after changes were agreed without formal public consultation. The Castle Point and Rochford Clinical Commissioning Group approved plans to reduce the number of IVF cycles from three to two, for women aged 23-39, back in May. Members also decided to extend access towomen aged 40-42, allowing them one cycle of IVF treatment at the same meeting. The changes emerged after Southends CCG announced it was planning to change its IVF policy in the same way. Both policies in Castle Point and Rochford and Southend, go against guidelines set out by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which suggest women aged 23-39 should be offered three cycles and women aged 40-42 one full cycle, providing certain criteria are fulfilled. A spokesman for Castle Point and Rochford CCG confirmed a formal consultation did not take place, but members spoke to the public at monthly engagement events across the two areas. Dr Mike Saad, chairman of NHS Castle Point and Rochford CCG, said: … Continue reading

Good samaritan donates 500 to widow denied IVF treatment with dead husband’s sperm

Posted: Published on August 2nd, 2014

Donna Turner is one step closer to fulfilling her late husband's dying wish[INS ] New bride, Donna Turner, 32, was left distraught after her local NHS refused to carry out the 3,500 IVF treatment to fulfil her late husband Paul's dying wish because it would make her a single parent. Mr Turner died from bowel cancer in January 2013, aged 39, just eight months after the couple married. Now good samaritan William Brady has written a 500 cheque to help Mrs Turner get one step closer to raising the cash to have it done privately. The father-of-two from Addlestone in Surrey, said: "I'm just a sincere well-wisher. "I love my kids so much and I think this lady should have a chance of having that happiness. If she can't get it through the National Health I would hope she can get it through private means." Although prompted by his disgust at the NHS's decision Mr Brady said he recently had treatment on the NHS and was keen to stress it was vastly different to Mrs Turner's. "They were absolutely brilliant to me, I can't speak highly enough of the staff. "But I am disgusted at some of the cases where … Continue reading
