For a small proportion of them, In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a technology that can restore the dream of parenthood. IVF is the fertilization of an egg by sperm outside the body, where it is cultivated in a lab environment, and if an embryo results it is implanted into the mother's womb. Now the chances of IVF treatment being successful are being boosted by a machine called the Embryoscope. A record number of babies are being born through IVF -- with over 60,000 IVF babies born in the United States alone in 2012. But since the inception of IVF in the 1970s, monitoring embryos has been a difficulty. In order to examine them, the embryologist must remove them from the safe environment of the incubator and expose them to environmental hazards such as temperature changes and contaminants. IVF treatment to be offered to York couples on NHS 11:10am Friday 20th June 2014 in News By Mike Laycock, Chief reporter CAMPAIGNERS have hailed a decision to give York couples one cycle of IVF treatment on the NHS, bringing the area into line with the rest of the UK. The NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCG) Governing Body said yesterday it had agreed a criteria for treatment for couples. The group was previously the only one in the country not to offer a single cycle of the fertility treatment after Scarborough and Ryedale voted last month to reintroduce it. Karen Boardman, 34, of Heworth, York, who has been trying to conceive since she married her husband Pete three years ago, and has spoken out previously about the issue, said yesterday: Its absolutely excellent news. Not only did she have to confront the loss of her partner but the couple's first child, Oscar, was just two weeks old. Her dreams for the future - a large, happy, rowdy family - were shattered.
