Disappointment over changes to IVF rules in Norfolk

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2014

Women under 40 who qualify for in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Norfolk will only be able to receive two full cycles under new rules. Adam Gretton Health correspondent adam.gretton@archant.co.uk Thursday, May 29, 2014 6:30 AM Campaigners have called for health chiefs to reverse a decision to reduce the number of NHS funded fertility treatments available to women across the majority of Norfolk. To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in. Recommendations were made earlier this year by the East of England Specialised Commissioning Group to change the way NHS funded IVF treatments are offered. More than 3,000 IVF cycle treatments are performed across the East every year, which costs the NHS more than 10m. More than 320 cycles of IVF treatment are funded by the NHS in Norfolk every year, which costs more than 1m. Adopting full NICE recommendations would increase costs by a further 4.3m. The cost of including 40 to 42 year olds across the region for one cycle of IVF is 1.5m. Reducing the number of cycles from three to two, not adopting guidance on waiting times, but including the age range extension saves up to 1m across the East … Continue reading

A family at last thanks to pioneering fertility treatment

Posted: Published on May 22nd, 2014

Innovative fertility treatment using egg yolks has helped a couple become parents after nine years of heartache. Lucy and Liam Phasey, from North Wales, had four rounds of conventional IVF treatment through the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals NHS Trust and suffered the pain of miscarriage. But now, thanks to a pioneering treatment at in Manchester, they are proud parents to 14-week-old Evie. Mrs Phasey, 27, was told in 2007 that she would never conceive naturally because of a rare condition which meant her immune system was fighting the embryo cells. They went through four attempts, between October 2009 and April 2012, on the NHS, but each failed, and despite scrimping and saving they were unable to afford any more. The pair then stumbled across CARE, an infertility treatment centre in Manchester, where a doctor told them Mrs Phaseys immune system was too strong, killing off embryos because it thought they were a foreign body. The 27-year-old was given intravenous intralipid therapy, a treatment administered through an IV drip and made from soya bean oil, egg yolk, glycerin and water. The therapy stimulates the immune system to suppress so-called 'natural killer cells' and allow an embryo to implant in the womb. … Continue reading

Angelina Jolie ‘considering IVF’

Posted: Published on May 18th, 2014

GROWING FAMILY? Perhaps six is not enough for Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. Angelina Jolie is reportedly considering IVF treatment to have more children. The 38-year-old actress and her husband Brad Pitt already raise six children together. Following her double mastectomy last year after discovering she was genetically predisposed to breast and ovarian cancer, Angelina is thought to be thinking about having her ovaries removed as an extra precaution. However, this would mean she would be unable to fall pregnant, which has apparently left the brunette beauty considering other means of having kids. "Brad assured Angelina that their family is more than enough and he'll support her no matter what. IVF is always an option if she wanted to have another child, and she could freeze her eggs," a source told British magazine Closer. "Brad and Angelina don't want the children to be scared. They want them to be aware of what's happening. They discussed it sensitively and the kids gave Angelina the boost she needed. "She knows if she has the surgery it's going to be tough, but being around for her children long-term makes it worthwhile." Three of the couple's children - Maddox, Pax and Zahara - are … Continue reading

Sweden could legalize IVF for single mothers

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

Published: 16 May 2014 12:37 GMT+02:00 Updated: 16 May 2014 12:37 GMT+02:00 Single women in Sweden should no longer need to travel abroad for in vitro fertilisation (IVF), a new inquiry has proposed. If applied, single women would have the same reproductive rights as women in a relationship. The proposal, based on a government-funded study, was handed over to the government on Friday "We need changes to the law and we propose to make it possible," investigator Eva Wendel Rosberg told the TT news agency. Today, single women in Sweden have no choice but to travel abroad if they want IVF treatment. Married women and those in long-term partnerships, meanwhile, have full access to IVF treatment at home. The differential treatment is based on a perception that a child has the right to two parents. "This would, in a way, take a step away from that. I think the winds are changing though, people have different opinions about assisted fertilization today compared to ten years ago," Wendel Rosberg added. NHS trusts told to end postcode lottery of IVF treatment

Posted: Published on May 16th, 2014

Now Nice is to issue new strengthened guidance directing the NHS to provide three full cycles universally. It will also direct trusts to provide, for free, a treatment for patients about to undergo cancer treatment that would probably leave them infertile. Egg, sperm and embryo freezing can be carried out prior to cancer treatment so the patient can have children later once given the all clear. This comes after a judge criticised Thanet Clinical Commissioning Group for refusing to fund this procedure for Elizabeth Rose who was about to undergo chemotherapy for a severe form of Crohns disease. Thanet's reason was that they simply disagreed with the Nice guidance. There will be an expectation that all NHS trusts comply with the new Nice 'quality standard'. The draft standard said women under the age of 40 who have not conceived after two year of trying or 12 cycles of artificial insemination should be offered three full cycles of IVF on the NHS. Women aged between 40 and 42 should be offered one cycle providing they have not previously had IVF. Sarah Norcross, co-chairman of the National Infertility Awareness Campaign (NIAC) said: This is an excellent move. We are delighted that Nice … Continue reading

2:57am, Thu 15 May 2014 NHS watchdog calls for end to 'postcode lottery' IVF Last updated Thu 15 May 2014 The IVF postcode lottery on the NHS needs to end if couples struggling to conceive are to have fair access to fertility drugs, the health watchdog has said. Read: IVF pioneer: Fertility treatments could 'threaten humanity' Treatments available to couples trying to get pregnant were set out by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) last year. However, it has emerged many of the treatments are rationed or just not available from some health bodies, leaving some couples to pay thousands of pounds as they try to have a baby. Nice recommended infertile couples where the woman is under the age of 40 are offered three full cycles of IVF treatment, but figures have shown health bodies are only offering one or none at all.
