Dutch researchers develop urine test for test tube baby success

Posted: Published on June 16th, 2014

Dutch researchers develop urine test for test tube baby success Saturday 14 June 2014 Researchers at Erasmus Universitys teaching hospital have developed a urine test which they say shows if a women is likely to become pregnant following ivf treatment. The test can spare many women unnecessary and costly ivf treatment, says researcher Dik Kok and fertility professor Joop Laven in Saturdays Volkskrant. The test involves looking for four bacteria in urine ahead of ivf treatment. Women who fail to become pregnant have a very specific volume of the bacteria in their urine which is completely different from those who do become pregnant. This bacteria shows how receptive the womb is likely to be to the embryo, the researchers say. Expensive Every year in the Netherlands, some 9,000 women undergo ivf treatment in which an egg is fertilized and then placed back in the womb. Many undergo several treatments and the annual cost is some 48m. But just one third of the women treated with ivf go on to become mothers. Kok and Laven estimate their urine test can exclude 2,600 women a year because the conditions in their wombs cannot sustain an embryo. They estimate this will cut 12m … Continue reading

IVF looks set to be offered in York

Posted: Published on June 12th, 2014

IVF looks set to be offered in York 9:50am Friday 6th June 2014 in News By Kate Liptrot, Health Reporter Campaigners reacted with delight last night after health bosses voted yes to the idea of offering IVF treatment to York couples. The Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group had been under fire for being the only place in the UK not to offer a single cycle of the fertility treatment to patients. But in a meeting of the governing body yesterday, members agreed in principle to make IVF available to couples in the Vale of York via a joint commissioning approach with NHS Scarborough and Ryedale CCG. A further announcement is due in two weeks. Karen Boardman, 34, from Heworth, who has been trying for a baby since she married her husband Pete three years ago, said last night: This is a fantastic step forward. I can only hope and encourage them to make the right final decision in two weeks - and allow so many couples in York to have a family. I was quite surprised. Its amazing. It did not think they were going to budge. Nicola Bates, Founder of IVFyes, the national patients campaign group, said: Its … Continue reading

IVF funding to be reinstated

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014

IVF funding to be reinstated 3:20pm Wednesday 4th June 2014 in Ryedale news A CHARITY which supports couples who are struggling to conceive has welcomed the news that Scarborough and Ryedale CCG are planning to reinstate funding for fertility treatment. Susan Seenan, chief executive of Infertility Network UK said they were delighted to hear that the CCG had recognised the importance of funding fertility treatment and were now looking at reintroducing this service for patients in the area. "Guidance set by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends up to three cycles of treatment for eligible couples and yet 10 years since the guideline was first published we are still facing an arbitrary approach to IVF funding around the country," she added. Scarboroughs decision means that the only area in the whole of the UK failing to fund any NHS treatment will be Vale of York and we hope now that they too will now review their policy. Lets not forget that infertility is a medical condition and that people with a fertility problem have the same right to be treated by the NHS as anyone else. The former Primary Care Trust ceased funding IVF in 2011 … Continue reading

Fertility bosses say ‘three-parent IVF’ is “not unsafe”

Posted: Published on June 4th, 2014

Fertility bosses say 'three-parent IVF' is "not unsafe" 5:43pm Tuesday 3rd June 2014 in News THE controversial three-parent IVF treatment developed by North-East scientists to prevent serious inherited conditions has moved a step closer to becoming reality. The UKs fertility treatment regulator said the pioneering technique developed by scientists at Newcastle University was not unsafe but suggested further checks before it is allowed to be used on patients. In February this year the Government launched a consultation on draft regulations for the use of techniques developed at Newcastle University to prevent mothers passing on serious mitochrondrial diseases. The techniques involve adapting IVF procedures to eliminate crippling mitochondrial disease. As part of the consultation the Department of Health requested the the Human Fertility and Embryology Authority (HFEA) to reconvene its expert panel to examine the safety and effectiveness of these techniques. The result of the review the third of its kind was that the panel accepted that the techniques are potentially useful for the treatment of severe or lethal genetic disease and that the techniques are not unsafe. However the expert panel felt that there are still some experiments that need to be completed before clinical treatment is offered to patients. … Continue reading

IVF hope for Ryedale women

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2014

Ryedale women given IVF hope 1:29pm Wednesday 28th May 2014 in Ryedale news By Gazette Reporter Local GPs on the NHS Scarborough and Ryedale CCG Governing Body have agreed to reintroduce In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) treatment for women in the area. IVF, which has been a hot topic since the former primary care trust ceased funding it in 2011 due to financial pressures, was discussed at the CCGs Governing Body meeting held in public at Ryedale District Council. The item was presented by Carrie Wollerton, executive nurse on the governing body. Her recommendation to establish a working group to further investigate options for reintroducing IVF received wide support from other governing body members. Mrs Wollerton explained that although the funding of IVF did not feature on the CCGs financial plans for 2014/15, funding should still be considered; particularly in light of moves by neighbouring CCGs to reintroduce some form of IVF treatment. Mrs Wollerton said: Due to the fact the CCG has managed to achieve its target of ending the financial year with a one percent surplus, and in line with our promise to review the commissioning position around IVF after our first year of operation, it is encouraging that … Continue reading

Disappointment over changes to NHS funding rules for IVF treatment in Norfolk

Posted: Published on May 31st, 2014

Women under 40 who qualify for in vitro fertilization (IVF) in Norfolk will only be able to receive two full cycles under new rules. Adam Gretton Health correspondent adam.gretton@archant.co.uk Thursday, May 29, 2014 6:30 AM Campaigners have called for health chiefs to reverse a decision to reduce the number of NHS funded fertility treatments available to women across the majority of Norfolk. To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in. Recommendations were made earlier this year by the East of England Specialised Commissioning Group to change the way NHS funded IVF treatments are offered. More than 3,000 IVF cycle treatments are performed across the East every year, which costs the NHS more than 10m. More than 320 cycles of IVF treatment are funded by the NHS in Norfolk every year, which costs more than 1m. Adopting full NICE recommendations would increase costs by a further 4.3m. The cost of including 40 to 42 year olds across the region for one cycle of IVF is 1.5m. Reducing the number of cycles from three to two, not adopting guidance on waiting times, but including the age range extension saves up to 1m across the East … Continue reading
