Couples seeking IVF ‘face unfair postcode lottery’

Posted: Published on April 26th, 2014

Couples in London and the South East are being denied IVF treatment offered in other parts of the country because of a geographical lucky dip, a Conservative MP claims. Caroline Dinenage, MP for Gosport in Hampshire, said a desperate unfair postcode lottery dictates who receives IVF on the NHS. The geographical discrepancies are stark, she said. A couple in the North East or East Anglia will find that they have access to IVF in line with or above the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidance. But couples in the South East will find that they are only able to access one round of treatment. Ms Dinenage wrote for the website Conservativehome on the topic. She claimed that men and women who were desperate to have a child were being forced to go private to gain fertility treatment. She called for the treatment to be standardised. Peoples chances of having a child when they cant conceive naturally should not be down to a geographical lucky dip, she said. Access to a reasonable amount of IVF treatment should be universally available to those who need it. See original here: Couples seeking IVF 'face unfair postcode lottery' … Continue reading

Ban on free infertility treatment to be lifted

Ban on free infertility treatment to be lifted 7:10am Wednesday 23rd April 2014 in News By Barry Nelson, Health Editor NHS commissioners in North Yorkshire are to end a controversial ban on funding free infertility treatment for eligible couples. In recent years the former primary care trust in North Yorkshire refused to fund free in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment to protect existing services, unlike most of the rest of England. But the new GP-run Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) set up last year has decided it can now afford to provide free IVF treatment to eligible couples. This means that women in the area under the age of 40 who are having difficulty conceiving will now be offered up to two cycles of IVF treatment. Where a couple meet the specified criteria and a woman is under 40 years of age, the CCG will fund up to two full cycles of IVF, and where a woman is between 40 and 42, one full cycle. Dr George Campbell, lead for planned care at the CCG, said: We recognise how the old policy may have seemed unfair for local couples, especially when people living in other parts of the … Continue reading

Cambridge News Follow us on Wednesday 23 Apr 2014 1:18 AM Written byLYDIA FALLON 2 Images Ian and Danielle Liht are quite the little charmers. Happily toddling around their Cambridge home all bright eyes and cheeky smiles the 17-month-old twins are impossibly cute. Currently going through an adventurous stage according to their mum Jessica, their new favourite game is climbing; their little faces lighting up in pure joy as they clamber up on to the table, one after the other. They always have to copy what the other one is doing, Jessica laughs, scooping them up on to her knee for cuddles. If one of them is doing something, the other one wants to do it too! They are both completely different though, she adds. Dani is very feisty and clear, she knows what she wants, and Ian is more cuddly and chilled out. Gazing at them adoringly, Jessica, 36, is the epitome of a besotted mummy, but after waiting nearly seven years for these kinds of moments, thats really no surprise. When I got to bring them home for the first time it was an amazing feeling, an indescribable feeling of completeness and pure joy, Jessica smiles, wiping away … Continue reading

Pregnant Italian woman to keep twins after IVF ‘mix-up’

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2014

Italian government inspectors were due on Monday to visit the Pertini hospital in Rome, where the treatment occurred, after the woman underwent a pre-natal check which revealed her unborn children possessed different DNA to her and her husband. The woman, who has not been named, underwent IVF treatment on Dec. 4, at the same time as three other women, one of whom had a similar surname to hers, Italian press reported on Monday. Corriere della Sera said their surnames were identical except for three letters. Michele Ambrosini, a lawyer representing the woman, said she was determined to push on with her pregnancy. "If she had wanted an abortion she would have already done it," he said. There has been no word from the real mother of the twins, whose own IVF pregnancy reportedly ended with a miscarriage. But Italian legal experts said that she would have no chance of claiming custody, since under Italian law, whoever gives birth to children is the legal mother. "Legal claims will be useless to get the twins back," Lorenzo D'Avack, vice president of Italy's national bioethics committee said. The case is another blow to the reputation of Italy's medical profession, following the sentence of … Continue reading

Italian woman set to keep ‘wrong’ twins after IVF mix-up

Posted: Published on April 15th, 2014

World Rome: An Italian woman who is carrying twins that are not her own following an apparent hospital IVF mix-up will most likely be allowed to keep the babies. Italian government inspectors have begun investigations at the Pertini hospital in Rome, where the treatment took place, after a pre-natal check showed that the woman's unborn children possessed different DNA to her and her husband. The woman, who has not been named, had IVF treatment on December 4, at the same time as three other women, one of whom had a similar surname, the Italian press reported. Staff may have mixed up the embryos ready for insertion, or the women might even have responded to the wrong name when they were called from the waiting room for treatment, according to reports. Michele Ambrosini, a lawyer representing the woman, said she was determined to push on with her pregnancy. "If she had wanted an abortion she would have already done it," he said.
