TUCSON - When you bring your child to swim lessons, everyone's focused on the child. But parents need more information also. Dr. Jessica Schultz, a pediatrician with Children's Medical Center of Tucson has a water safety talk with families during those critical well checks. On the day Kristi's Kids was there, Dr. Schultz asked Angela and Gilbert Preciado if they have a swimming pool and if it has a proper barrier while their 1- month-old son Lucas sits on their lap. Dr. Schultz is about to do something different for Lucas. "So we're gonna give you guys a prescription today," Dr. Schultz tells the Preciado's. Dr. Schultz is joining a movement to prescribe Water Safety Classes to parents and Swim Lessons for kids at well baby checks. There's a lot for parents to learn. "The bucket drowning. I never thought that could really occur," says Angela. "That was surprising to me that that happens." "The bath safety too," says Gilbert. CVS Caremark Corp. (CVS), the largest provider of prescription drugs in the U.S., reported first- quarter profit that beat analysts estimates, helped by demand for flu medications and new generic drugs. Net income increased 23 percent to $956 million, or 77 cents a share, from $776 million, or 59 cents, a year earlier, the Woonsocket, Rhode Island-based company said today in a statement. Excluding some items, profit totaled 83 cents a share. Analysts projected 79 cents, the average of 19 estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Chief Executive Officer Larry Merlo cited the flu season and the introduction of new generic drugs as key drivers of profitability during the quarter. The flu hit the U.S. earlier than normal this year, with 47 states reporting widespread instances of the virus in early January, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Retail pharmacy same-store prescription volumes rose 2 percent in the quarter. The strong incidence of flu in January/February helped boost prescription volume, Tom Gallucci, an analyst at Lazard Capital Markets in New York, wrote in a note April 25. He recommends buying CVS shares. CVS advanced 1 percent to $58.75 at the close in New York. The shares have climbed … Continue reading

Beware of Prescriptions Not Matching Pill Bottle Contents

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) has launched its Same/Same/Same information campaign as part of the organizations 2013 Thyroid Awareness initiative, as presented at the AACE 22nd Annual Scientific and Clinical Congress . Same/Same/Same reinforces the importance of thyroid patients taking the same dosage of the same medication and in the same manner every day. Even the slightest variance in the manufacturer of the prescription (whether generic or brand name), the time of days meds are taken or the medication dosage can interfere with the delicate balance thyroid medications are designed to achieve, sending the body into a tailspin and resulting in a host of side effects that can range from mildly uncomfortable to severe. Thyroid hormones influence every organ, tissue and cell in the body and control heart rate, body weight, body temperature, energy level, muscle strength and more. Adhering to a prescribed medical regimen is critical to restoring proper functioning to the body," says AACE President Alan Garber, MD, PhD, FACE. Its really now up to patients to be vigilant and certain that they receiving and taking their medication exactly as prescribed. Doctor disciplined for methadone prescriptions likely to close practice

Posted: Published on April 24th, 2013

GRUNDY CENTER, Iowa --- A doctor here will likely close his practice as a result of Iowa Board of Medicine disciplinary action against him in connection with his prescription of methadone to patients, his attorney said Tuesday. Kevin Engels, a Cedar Falls attorney representing Dr. Frank Lamp, said his client is disappointed in the states action. After discussing the matter with him, he will likely close his practice in the near future, Engels said. It comes a month after he was acquitted of related misdemeanor criminal charges. In addition to the methadone-related incidents, Lamp also was disciplined for performing an inappropriate and/or medically unnecessary physical examination of a young female patient at his clinic in 2011, for which Engels noted he was never criminally charged. Lamp had been accused before the state board of professional incompetency; inappropriate prescribing; improper pain management; violating laws and rules of the practice of medicine and unethical or unprofessional conduct. The Board of Medicine cited Lamp for professional incompetency and violating rules of the practice of medicine when he inappropriately prescribed controlled substances, particularly methodone, to patients with known substance abuse histories between 2009 and 2011. He was issued a warning in connection with the … Continue reading

Posted: Published on April 23rd, 2013

BLADE STAFF Drop-off sites for unneeded or expired medications will be set up Saturday at five firehouses throughout the Anthony Wayne school district. Over-the-counter, prescription, or veterinary medications in pills or capsules, and vitamins, will be accepted between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The event allows people to dispose of these drugs in a safe and environmentally friendly way. The local drug drop-off is part of a nationwide Prescription Drug Take-Back Day promoted by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. Ann Cherry, a Waterville city councilman involved in the event, said people may pour all unneeded medications into locking plastic bags if they dont want to turn in pill bottles with their names on them. Organizers also will destroy the labels. The Waterville Fire Departments site is drive-through. Other area fire stations with drop-offs include the Monclova, Whitehouse, and Providence Township departments and the Springfield Township station at 7145 Garden Rd. There Aren't Easy Policy Prescriptions After Boston Bombing

Posted: Published on April 20th, 2013

It remains to be seen why Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the two suspects in the Boston Marathon bombing, decided to stuff explosives into pressure cookers on Monday and wreak mass carnage at the finish line. But what has become increasingly apparent is that no matter what the brothers motives were, President Obama, Congress, and law-enforcement officials wont find any easy answers to prevent attacks by terrorists who appear to be isolated and acting alone. Given the legal and privacy constraints that were under as a democratic and pretty open society, theres a limit to what the FBI and law enforcement can do. Nobody wants a police state, said Christian Beckner, deputy director of the Homeland Security Policy Institute at George Washington University and a former staffer with the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. Part of the equation here is trying to dissuade people from going down that path and empowering local communities, but once people become detached and disaffected, its hard to prevent people from going there. The early signs indicate that Tamerlan, 26, the elder brother who was gunned down in a police chase this morning, and Dzhokhar, 19, the younger who continues to evade capture, were … Continue reading

Doctor suspended 180 days over inappropriate prescriptions

Posted: Published on April 12th, 2013

By Misti Crane The Columbus Dispatch Friday April 12, 2013 5:46 AM Dr. Robert C. Turner, who practiced with Cardinal Orthopaedic Institute, has agreed to stop treating patients for at least 180 days. The State Medical Board sent Turner, 64, a letter last year accusing him of inappropriately prescribing narcotics and excessively prescribing acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage. The board letter also said that Turner did not keep good records on several patients and gave inappropriate cortisone injections. In an agreement between the doctor and the board, he admitted to the allegations and agreed to a suspension. To practice again, he must adhere to certain conditions, including taking courses on prescribing controlled medicines and maintaining medical records. The practice has several offices in central Ohio. The board also sent a letter this week to massage therapist Heather Kochenash of Hilliard indicating that it might take action against her license based on her guilty plea to a first-degree misdemeanor last year. Kochenash, 38, was arrested in 2011 and charged with promoting prostitution. She has 30 days to request a hearing. mcrane@dispatch.com @MistiCrane Continue reading here: Doctor suspended 180 days over inappropriate prescriptions … Continue reading
