Posted: Published on March 22nd, 2015

A Filipina is seeking a financial assistance of $40,000 to have a stem cell transplant for her son who is confined in a hospital in the United Arab Emirates due to acute myeloid leukemia. Memelyn Teodosio Rose, 60, said her son Larry Castro, 35, needs an urgent stem cell transplant but has no money for it, Gulf News reported. I desperately want to save my baby. Please help me, she appealed from the Philippines. She said that while she was identified as a perfect match for her son, they could not afford the procedure. Mrs. Rose said Larry, her only child from her first marriage, suffered a second relapse in 2011 and has been confined to a Dubai hospital since. For his part, Castro said it pains him to see his mother in despair. "She cries all the time. I pray that we can go through the transplant as early as possible. A hospital in New Delhi is ready to do the procedure but we do not have the money for it, he said. Castro said he was healthy until 2011 when his gums started bleeding and he developed fever. He spent five months in a hospital in the first … Continue reading

Finn McEwen meets his Everton heroes at Finch Farm

Posted: Published on March 21st, 2015

VIEW GALLERY Brave Litherland boy Finn McEwen met his Everton heroes at Finch Farm this afternoon. Finn, 7, who suffers from bone marrow failure and is in desperate need of a stem cell transplant, met the first team players following their return from Kiev. He is a particular fan of striker Romelu Lukaku so he was very excited to meet the Belgian player. He and his brother Lucas, 6, also met players including James McCarthy, Tony Hibbert and Sylvain Distin. Finn and his family had lunch in the Finch Farm canteen and were given a tour of the training ground. The boys and dad Neil, 46, also met Everton legend Graeme Sharp and the players signed a shirt for him. Graeme urged people to support Finn by registering to see if they are a match. He said: Registration is really simple, it is not an intrusive process. Initially it involves logging your details online, receiving a pack in the post, using a swab and brushing the inside of your mouth and sending it back. It really is that simple and it could ultimately save Finns and other peoples lives. Follow this link: Finn McEwen meets his Everton heroes at Finch … Continue reading

The Lancet: Targeted drug doubles progression free survival in Hodgkin lymphoma

Posted: Published on March 20th, 2015

A phase 3 trial of brentuximab vedotin (BV), the first new drug for Hodgkin lymphoma in over 30 years, shows that adults with hard-to-treat Hodgkin lymphoma given BV immediately after stem cell transplant survived without the disease progressing for twice as long as those given placebo (43 months vs 24 months). The findings, published in The Lancet, are potentially practice changing for this young cancer population who have exhausted other treatment options and for whom prognosis is poor. "No medication available today has had such dramatic results in patients with hard-to-treat Hodgkin lymphoma"*, says lead author Craig Moskowitz, a Professor of Medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA. Hodgkin lymphoma is the most common blood cancer in young adults aged between 15 and 35 years. Most patients are cured with chemotherapy or radiotherapy. However, for patients who relapse, or do not respond to initial therapy, the treatment of choice is usually a combination of high-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT)--a procedure that uses healthy stem cells from the patient to replace those lost to disease or chemotherapy. While about 50% of patients who undergo this procedure are cured, for the other half treatment is palliative. … Continue reading

New Drug May Help Keep Hodgkin Lymphoma at Bay

Posted: Published on March 20th, 2015

WEDNESDAY, March 18, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- An FDA-approved drug doubled the amount of time that patients with Hodgkins lymphoma survived without any progression in their disease, a new study shows. All of the patients also received stem cell therapy along with the drug, called brentuximab vedotin. While the results are encouraging, doctors may never know if the drug is actually lengthening patients' lives, said Dr. Owen O'Connor, director of the Center for Lymphoid Malignancies at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City. That's because brentuximab is fast becoming standard care for all patients with Hodgkin lymphoma who've relapsed after stem cell transplant, he said. So, a trial comparing the survival of patients who got the drug against those who did not might never be feasible, due to ethical concerns. O'Connor was not involved in the trial, which was led by Dr. Craig Moskowitz, professor of medicine at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. His team published the findings March 18 in The Lancet. The study was funded by Seattle Genetics Inc. and drug maker Takeda. According to the American Cancer Society, about 9,000 new cases of Hodgkin lymphoma are diagnosed each year, and more than … Continue reading

Memory of Margot Martini marked by search for blood stem cell donors

Posted: Published on March 18th, 2015

THE memory of tragic toddler Margot Martini will be honoured by county council staff to help others looking for blood stem cell donors. Worcestershire County Council will be teaming up with Delete Blood Cancer UK to hold a special registration event for staff on Wednesday, March 24 to find potential blood stem cell donors. The day will be in honour of Margot Martini who was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of dual lineage leukaemia aged 14 months in October 2013. A bone marrow transplant from an anonymous person in February 2014, who had registered as a blood stem cell donor, provided Margot a chance of beating her blood cancer, and gave her extra time with her family and loved ones. Sadly, Margot lost her battle in October 2014. Following Margot's diagnosis, her family and friends set up Team Margot to raise awareness of Margot's plight and that of others needing a stem cell donor. Marcus Hart, cabinet member for Health and Well Being said: "It is extremely sad Margot Martini lost her life so young. "The donors kind, benevolent act provided her best chance for beating blood cancer and gave her precious time with her family. "Someone is diagnosed … Continue reading

Finn McEwen: Family's bone marrow appeal to help save seven-year-old with rare condition

Posted: Published on March 16th, 2015

A little boy with an extremely rare condition is in desperate need of a transplant to save his life. Finn McEwen, seven, from Litherland has bone marrow failure and now his family are facing a race against time to find a stem cell match. His condition, myelodysplastic syndrome, is extremely rare in children and cannot be treated with chemotherapy, so a transplant is Finns only hope. His family, including dad Neil, 46, baby sister Seren, 18 months, and brother Lucas, 6, have all been ruled out as matches and Finn needs to have the transplant within the next six to eight weeks to have the best chance of recovery. His mum Carole, 43, told the Liverpool Echo Finn has always been well and active, and it was a massive shock when doctors said he had the condition. The family had to endure weeks of waiting after Finn suffered a serious nosebleed in January before doctors could find out what was wrong with him, as it is extremely difficult to diagnose. Cry for help: A transplant is the only cure for the condition, which is caused by bone marrow not making enough healthy red blood cells Carole said: Its been this … Continue reading
