FORMER Manchester United defender Daley Blind is back in training at Ajax - just a month after being diagnosed with a heart condition.

Medics discovered Blind had a serious heart muscle infection in December.

Blind had suffered dizziness in a Champions League match against Valencia.

The 29-year-old defender did not attend the club training camp in Qatar over the winter break.

But he has now returned to training.

He told Ziggo Sport: ""It's going well. He has started his training programme again and is now seeing how that goes and what should be the next."

But the Holland international does not know when he will return to the first team.

He said: "In the end, everyone has something in mind about that. But it doesn't seem wise to say anything about that now."

Blind carried out tests in hospital to see how his heart responded.

His father Danny explained: "You try to put things into perspective.

Cardiomyopathy is a general term for diseases of the heart muscle, where the walls of the heart chambers have become stretched, thickened or stiff. This affects the heart's ability to pump blood around the body.

The abnormal heart muscle seen in cardiomyopathy is not caused by blocked arteries in the heart (coronary artery disease), high blood pressure (hypertension), disease of the heart valves (valvular disease) or congenital heart disease.

Most types of cardiomyopathy are inherited and are seen in children and younger people.

How serious is it?

If you have dilated cardiomyopathy, you're at greater risk of heart failure, where the heart fails to pump enough blood around the body at the right pressure.

Heart failure typically causes shortness of breath, extreme tiredness and ankle swelling. Learn more about the symptoms of heart failure.

There's also a risk of heart valve problems, an irregular heartbeat and blood clots. You'll need to have regular appointments with a GP so the condition can be monitored.

"There is often another side to that, so that you start to put things into perspective. "He had a moment and that could have been different.

"But it ended well and he feels great. Life just goes on again."

The defender has had a subcataneous ICD put in under his skin to monitor his heart.

Ajax hope he may be able to return to playing in February but are carefully monitoring his situation.

Blind played over 140 games for United between 2014 and 2018.
