Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce have slammed calls for a boycott on their brand as "medieval".

The designers came under fire after a controversial interview where they were quoted as calling IVF babies "synthetic".

Elton John, whose two sons Zachary, five, and Elijah, two, with husband David Furnish were conceived through IVF treatment, led calls to boycott the brand and was backed by stars including Ricky Martin and Courtney Love.

Hitting back, Gabbana said: "Boycott Dolce & Gabbana for what? They don't think like you? This is correct? This is not correct. We are in 2015. This is like medieval. It's not correct."

He continued: "I believe in the traditional family. It is impossible to change my culture for something different. It's me... I respect all the world, all the culture."

During a joint interview with CNN, Gabbana's design partner and former lover Dolce was asked if he supported having children through IVF.

He replied to say: "Yeah, I don't have anything bad, because the beauty of the world is freedom...

"We love gay couple. We are gay. We love gay couple. We love gay adoption. We love everything. It's just an express of my private point of view."

Dolce and Gabbana's initial comments appeared in Italian magazine Panorama, in which they were quoted as saying: "We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one.
