KUALA LUMPUR: The heartfelt story of Jameyah Sheriff helping her classmate Tan Chin Chin, 37, a cerebral palsy sufferer, certainly touched the hearts of many and, of course, she was considered a hero when she was selected to be among the five MyHero 3.0 Award recipients.

For her, the value and meaning of friendship cannot be measured by wealth but by the sense of responsibility, purity, compassion and sincerity in a relationship between friends.

According to Jameyah, in 2003, she had the opportunity to further her studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in the Social Sciences major and it was during the first week of college, when she heard several announcements by a lecturer about a student with a disability who needed help with transportation to college.

At that time I did not know that the student had cerebral palsy until the third day when Chin Chin spoke in front of the college for help. When I looked at her face and her physical condition, I went downstairs and offered Chin Chin help. After that, my friendship with Chin Chin began. Since I dont stay in the hostel, I would invite Chin Chin to breakfast first.

We had a lot of sweet experiences throughout the course of learning. My children also have a good relationship with Chin Chin and Chin Chin is also a source of inspiration to my children, she said when interviewed by an Utusan Borneo correspondent.

Jameyah added that her relationship with Chin Chin is still intact even after graduation as they are still meeting each other.

I also tried to help Chin Chin get a job at USM, and to this day Chin Chin is still working at USM as a Social Research Officer. I am so grateful that Chin Chin finally got a job and Chin Chin was able to buy a house for her and her mother to live in.

There are actually a lot of interesting stories of what weve been through together until now. Chin Chin is a person with a broad view of life. Although we have problems communicating, we often talk about and sometimes debate on various issues. I hope the community can accept the disabled as one of the productive members of society and contribute to the harmony and well-being of the nation, she added.

Asked how she felt when she was crowned the recipient of the MyHero 3.0 Award, Jameyah expressed her happiness and gratitude because she said the award is a tribute to her and her friends who are always concerned about the lives of the people around them.

But that is not the main reason why I do volunteer work. What is important to me through this award is that the public will be more open to the importance of caring in our community so that people can be given help regardless of race, religion or language, she commented.

Through this recognition, Jameyah received a cash prize of RM5,000 and a trophy and certificate of appreciation. At the same time, she was also named Ambassador of Unity by the National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN).

Although 59 years old and a mother of six, Jameyah is still volunteering to help people in need. She also runs several volunteer activities in Sabah besides doing volunteer works in Kuala Lumpur.

I run several educational programmes for undocumented children, through a non-governmental organisation (NGO) there (in Sabah). Every three months I go there to train volunteers and carry out various activities with these children. We have also been able to set up a library for them with the help of friends from Peninsular Malaysia.

Since these children cannot afford regular schooling, learning at the Alternative Centre focuses on skills that will help them continue their adult life. I also try to instil in them a sense of worth, so that they will become useful people despite their nationality, said Jameyah.

The MyHero Award is a collaborative programme between the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Chamber of Industry (KLSCCCI) and the Department of National Unity and National Integration (JPNIN) in an effort to recognise and value individuals who have sacrificed and worked hard in promoting unity among the diverse community in this country.

The Borneo Post, See Hua Daily News, Utusan Borneo, Orizon, Sinar Harian, The Sun and Tamil Malar are the official media partners for the MyHero 3.0 Award.
