Mom of 10-year-old girl who starved to death sentenced in Broome County – Pressconnects

A Broome County mother was sentenced to 15years in prison Friday, two years after the starvation death of her 10-year-old daughter.

Serina Madden, 32, from Nineveh,pleaded guilty in November 2019to first-degree manslaughter, days before her jury trial on a second-degree murder indictment was set to begin.If convicted, she faced up to 25 years to life in prison.

Shewas accused of recklessly engaging in severe neglect malnutrition, starvation, lack of medical care that caused her child's death.

Her daughter, Belladonna Loke, had been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, couldn't feed herself and required a wheelchair. Prosecutors said the child was starved in her final days.

Court records said Madden brought her four children to Broome County, New York, from Georgia in late 2017. They stayed at a relative's East Windsor Road home.

The children weren't attending school, according to court records, and Belladonna hadn't seen a doctor since leaving Georgia.

Madden went into her daughter's room around 7 a.m. Feb. 17, 2018, according to court records, and discovered her daughter had died. Prosecutors said Madden then failed to take care of her daughter's remains.

"No punishment will ever bring back 10-year-old Belladonna Loke," Broome County District Attorney Michael Korchak said in a statement Friday."Her death is nothing short of tragic."

Madden's prison term will be followed by five years of post-release supervision.
