Frequency of Cardiac Rhythm Abnormalities in a Half …

Posted: Published on July 11th, 2018

Abstract Background: The frequency of cardiac rhythm abnormalities and their risk factors in community-dwelling adults are not well characterized. Methods: We determined the frequency of rhythm abnormalities in the UK Biobank, a national prospective cohort. We tested associations between risk factors and incident rhythm abnormalities using multivariable proportional hazards regression. Results: Of 502 627 adults (median age, 58 years [interquartile range, 13]; 54.4% women), 2.35% had a baseline rhythm abnormality. The prevalence increased with age with 4.84% of individuals aged 65 to 73 years affected. During 3 368 332 person-years of follow-up, 15 906 new rhythm abnormalities were detected (4.72 per 1000 person-years; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 4.654.80). Atrial fibrillation (3.11 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI: 3.053.17), bradyarrhythmias (0.89 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI: 0.860.92), and conduction system diseases (1.06 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI: 1.021.09) were more common than supraventricular (0.51 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI: 0.480.53) and ventricular arrhythmias (0.57 per 1000 person-years; 95% CI: 0.550.60). Older age (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.35 per 10-year increase; 95% CI: 2.292.41; P … Continue reading

Nuclear Medicine – Molecular Imaging – Nuclear Medicine …

Posted: Published on July 11th, 2018

TRUE DISCOVERY AWAITS It takes a certain mind to go in search of true discovery. In nuclear medicine, they are the clinical researchers looking to set new standards of care, the practitioners working to deliver better outcomes for the patients they see every day and the cardiologists seeking a better understanding of the heart. While they all have the same goal, their needs are different and cant all be met with one system or technology. Nuclear medicine is an excellent choice for physicians at the forefront of medicine. It has a wide range of available radioisotopes with various energy emission levels and longer half-lives. It also has the flexibility to explore multiple pathways in a single session. These are some of the reasons why we made a commitment to realizing the full potential of and growing this modality. This commitment involves making nuclear medicine technology more accessible and enabling it to provide results that are more valuable to referring physicians. It means driving down daily operational costs and innovating in four key areas: image quality, dose reduction, exam speeds and quantitative applications. All with the end result of enabling better clinical and economic outcomes. It also includes our vision for … Continue reading

In October 2010, the Childrens Heart Program opened the Pediatric Hybrid Cardiac Catheterization Suite. This state-of-the-art suite is the first of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region. The hybrid suite serves as both a fully dedicated pediatric cardiac catheterization laboratory and surgical suite. Cardiac catheterization is a diagnostic test that seeks to acquire additional information about the structure and function of a persons heart. Some cardiac catheterization procedures also allow the interventional cardiologist to improve or even fix an underlying heart defect. Procedures include: State-of-the-art cardiac MRI technology is available to non-invasively diagnose even the most complex forms of congenital heart … Continue reading

Although cerebral palsy (CP) has no known cure yet, there are amyriad of treatments that have been proven successful in helping those with CP live more productively. If youre the parent of a child or infant with CP, its important to understand what treatment options are available in order to determine what will work best for you. CP is a wide-spectrum disorder, ranging from mild to severe, and treatment will depend upon your childs individual circumstances. According to the American Physical Therapy Association, getting a child with CP involved in physical therapy is one of the most important things you can do for treatment of the disorder. Physical therapy involves rehabilitating the childs physical disabilities through a series of muscle training. Since each childs situation is unique, a professional physical therapist will typically perform an assessment, and based upon its findings, individualized physical therapy plans will follow. Common exercises included in physical therapy sessions include: In some instances, children with CP will have swimming therapy during their physical therapy sessions. These sessions are done with careful assistance and caution, but are extremely important as it allows children to utilize muscle groups and do therapeutic exercises they otherwise arent able to … Continue reading

SMA Added to National List of Disorders to Screen for at Birth After significant collaborative work among many stakeholders in the spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) community, we are pleased to share that the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Alex Azar, has accepted the recommendation to add SMA to the Recommended Uniform Screening Panel for newborns. This is a landmark decision for the SMA community. This week, Sarepta Therapeutics announced encouraging preliminary results from a phase 1/2a gene therapy trial designed to assess the investigational drug AAVrh74.MHCK7.micro-Dystrophin in boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). After 90 days in the trial, the first three participants all showed robust expression of micro-dystrophin a shortened version of the protein that is absent in the muscle of those with DMD. MDA National Ambassador Justin aspires to become a researcher and is preparing now to head to college and major in bioinformatics and computational biology. Check out the story he wrote to share a few thoughts on his next exciting chapter. In the 25 years since her husbands diagnosis, Karen has seen a lot of progress on the ALS front. She is optimistic about where research is headed but still remembers what it was … Continue reading

DIY Homemade Eczema Cream – Kula Mama

Childhood eczema can be very uncomfortable for your little one. We know all too well how child eczema can affect the whole family. You can read about how I healed my daughters eczema naturally in this post. I know first-hand how itchy and cranky a child with eczema can be. While the cause of eczema resides on the inside and requires a holistic approach to heal,a homemade eczema cream may be beneficial while you wait for the internal healing to begin. We used a homemade eczema cream made with shea butter, coconut oil and lavender and melaleuca (tea tree) essential oils for my daughter. This cream contains healing properties to soothe your childs irritated skin and offer some relief. When we didnt have time to make our own cream, we used this manuka honey eczema cream instead. The ingredients: Shea butter: High in vitamin A, shea butter is healing for an array of skin conditions including eczema, dermatitis and even wrinkles. Make sure you use 100% pure shea butter like this one. Coconut oil: Coconut oil is naturally tough on bacteria and fungi and this helps to keep the skin clean (source), while the medium chain triglycerides are wonderfully moisturizing … Continue reading

No more sleepless nights! How to stop itchy eczema

Posted: Published on July 8th, 2018

Eczema is often referred to as the itch that you cant scratch but a more accurate statement should be the itch you SHOULDNT scratch! When you scratch your eczema, you tear open nerve endings and sensitive skin that can lead to bacterial infections, more inflamed patches of skin, and an increased risk of large scarring when your eczema does heal over. We want to avoid that! When I went through the Flawless Program to heal my eczema, I noticed that a lot of the itchiness subsided as my gut and immune system began to heal. However, there were still timesat night that I found it hard to stop scratching, and I noticed that other people, including children, alsohad the same issue. We all deserve to get a good nights sleep, so let me share with you a few of my tricks that I used when my eczema was the itchiestparticularly at night. It has to do with a bit of science and learning how to trick your brain! First things first, lets ask ourselvesthis question: Itching usually starts with a outside stimulus, think of an insect bite, dust, or prickly clothing for example. (In the case of most eczema, its when … Continue reading

In a video posted to Instagram on Monday, Maya can be seen struggling at first to gain her balance, but managing to take several steps before bursting out into laughter. Im walking! she exclaimed, Im walking! The moment defied doctors expectations. Doctors believed she would be unable to walk for about six months after undergoing a major spinal procedure in May, the Daily Mail reported. Less than two months later, Maya took her first steps without the assistance of a walker or cane. Shes doing it. Youve done it for like a minute, the girls brother can be heard saying in the video. The video was posted with the caption: First Steps - 4 years, 10 months. I cant even put into words how we are feeling. Nothing seems to fit the enormity of this moment for us.
