Cardiac Regeneration – Center for Regenerative Medicine – Mayo Clinic …

Posted: Published on April 11th, 2018

Reparative stem cells have the capability to restore function to damaged tissue by renewing cell growth (shown in green) in cardiac cells destroyed by heart disease. Approximately 28 million Americans have been diagnosed with heart disease. Traditional medical therapies are not able to fully address the burden of disease, and the shortage of organs for transplantation remains a key barrier more than 117,000 people are on the national transplant list. This unmet need drives Mayo Clinic researchers to make new discoveries to accelerate regenerative solutions into clinical trials and rapidly provide new hope to patients who can't currently be treated. Cardiac regeneration is a broad effort that aims to repair irreversibly damaged heart tissue with cutting-edge science, including stem cell and cell-free therapy. Reparative tools have been engineered to restore damaged heart tissue and function using the body's natural ability to regenerate. Working together, patients and providers are finding regenerative solutions that restore, renew and recycle patients' own reparative capacity. Through the vision and generous support of Russ and Kathy Van Cleve, strong efforts are underway to develop discoveries that will have a global impact on ischemic heart disease. Mayo Clinic researchers are leading efforts in translating new knowledge into … Continue reading

Spinal Cord Injury | Paralyzed Veterans of America

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2018

Every year, more than 12,000 people in the United States sustain a spinal cord injury. A spinal cord injury / disease (SCI/D) changes a persons life in an instant, and can have life-changing consequences. Veterans who have experienced an SCI can take advantage of ongoing support and helpful resources and benefits through aParalyzed Veterans of America membership. More than 5 million Americans are living with paralysis, one in 4 of them a result of spinal cord injury or disease. The spinal cord is the major channel through which motor and sensory information travels between the brain and body. When injury or disease of the spinal cord occurs, conduction of sensory and motor signals across the site of lesion(s) is impaired, resulting in loss of motor and/or sensory function. To further define, tetraplegia refers to impairment of function in the arms as well as the trunk, legs and pelvic organs. Paraplegia refers to impairment of arm functioning is spared and trunk, legs and pelvic organ involvement is dependent of the level of injury. Injuries are classified as incomplete if partial preservation of sensory and/or motor function is present below the level of injury, to include sensation at the lowest segment of … Continue reading

Heart Disease

Posted: Published on April 10th, 2018

Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death worldwide in men, women and children, claiming more than 17 million lives each year. The effects of congestive heart failure and acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) present great challenges for doctors and researchers alike. In this section: Heart attacks cause damage to the heart muscle, making it less efficient at pumping blood throughout the circulatory system. Your heart is constructed of several types of cells. For mending damaged heart tissue, researchers generally focus on three specific heart cell types: Gladstone Institutes. Close up of a mouse heart stained to reveal the important structural protein that helps heart muscle cells to contract (red). The cell nuclei are labeled in magenta. Despite major advances in how heart disease is managed, heart disease is progressive. Once heart cells are damaged, they cannot be replaced efficiently, at least not as we understand the heart today. There is evidence that the heart has some repair capability, but that ability is limited and not yet well understood. Heart failure is a general term to describe a condition in which the hearts blood-pumping action is weaker than normal. How much weaker varies widely from person to person, but … Continue reading

Interventional Cardiology Fellowship – Massachusetts General Hospital …

Posted: Published on April 8th, 2018

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital is a one-year ACGME-approved program, organized under the directorship of Douglas Drachman, MD. The fellowship functions as an integral component of the subspecialty residency in cardiology and the categorical residency program in internal medicine. During the year of interventional training, fellows are expected to master the techniques involved in coronary intervention, while developing perspective on procedural risk and benefit, patient selection and clinical decision-making in cardiovascular patient care. At the end of the year, fellows should function as independent operators during interventional procedures. The program adheres to the tenets outlined in the ACC COCATS guidelines document and the AHA statement on clinical competency in interventional cardiology. The primary goal of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is to provide comprehensive training in the diagnosis, care and endovascular treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease. Fellows graduating from Mass General's program will be poised to assume positions of leadership in the field of Interventional Cardiology. The fellowship program provides the opportunity to acquire procedural expertise including but not limited to: In additional to learning techniques for percutaneous coronary intervention, fellows will be exposed to non-coronary cardiac interventions and management of peripheral vascular disease. Non-coronary interventions include: … Continue reading
