Insomnia and Sleep Apnea Can Lead to Premature Birth, Large-scale Study Shows – Cerebral Palsy News Today

Posted: Published on August 17th, 2017

Insomnia and sleep apnea can lead to premature births, researchers report, a fact thataugments the prevalence of serious health-related issues in preterm babies, including cerebral palsy (CP). The study, Sleep Disorder Diagnosis During Pregnancy and Risk of Preterm Birth, was published in the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology. Premature births those that occur before the 37thweek of pregnancy are still a major problem worldwide. Pregnant women normally give birth at about 40 weeks. About 15 million premature babies are born in the worldevery year, and they are at increased risk of death from birth-related complications. Beyond cerebral palsy, preterm children can be born with developmental disabilities, hearing impairments, and other health problems, oftenbecause they havent fully developed in the womb. Sleep disorders like insomnia or sleep apnea have been suggested as being linked toanincreased risk of preterm birth. As a result, public health efforts have been working on better therapies for pregnant women with serious sleep disorders, as these could save babies lives while avoiding the use of medication. Now,an analysis of a large pool of three million pregnant women from 2007 to 2012 in California showed that better sleep can indeed minimize the number of premature births. Researchers analyzed anonymous records … Continue reading

White nationalists are flocking to genetic ancestry tests. Some don’t like what they find – STAT

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2017

I t was a strange moment of triumph against racism: The gun-slinging white supremacist Craig Cobb, dressed up for daytime TV in a dark suit and red tie, hearing that his DNA testing revealed his ancestry to be only 86 percent European, and 14 percent Sub-Saharan African. The studio audience whooped and laughed and cheered. And Cobb who was, in 2013, charged with terrorizing people while trying to create an all-white enclave in North Dakota reacted like a sore loser in the schoolyard. Wait a minute, wait a minute, hold on, just wait a minute, he said, trying to put on an all-knowing smile. This is called statistical noise. Then, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center, hetook to the white nationalist website Stormfront to dispute those results. Thats not uncommon: With the rise of spit-in-a-cup genetic testing, theres a trend of white nationalists using these services to prove their racial identity, and then using online forums to discuss the results. advertisement But like Cobb, many are disappointed to find out that their ancestry is not as white as theyd hoped. In a new study, sociologists Aaron Panofsky and Joan Donovan examined years worth of posts on Stormfront to see … Continue reading

Modern genetic sequencing tools give clearer picture of how corals are related – UW Today

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2017

Environment | News releases | Research | Science August 16, 2017 The documentary Chasing Coral, released on Netflix in July, is a cinematic warning about how the bleaching of coral reefs may foreshadow how these marine animals will respond to climate change. Corals are key to ocean health because they support the densest, most diverse ecosystems harboring species from turtles to algae to reef fish. University of Washington scientists are looking at the burgeoning field of coral genetics to better predict, and maybe even prepare for, corals future threats. Their new study uses modern genetic-sequencing tools to reveal the relatedness of three similar-looking corals. Porites porites can have spindlier branches (upper right) or thicker, knobbier branches (lower images). Scientists have debated whether or not they are the same species.James Dimond/University of Washington This coral appears to be three different species, but its been debated whether its really three separate species or whether its one thats really variable in its appearance, said first author James Dimond, a UW doctoral student in aquatic and fishery sciences. Defining a species matters for conservation, because you cant monitor and protect a species if you dont know it exists. In the past weve relied on … Continue reading

Stem Cells From Young Hearts Could Rejuvenate Old Hearts – Technology Networks

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2017

Cardiac stem cell infusions could someday help reverse the aging process in the human heart, making older ones behave younger, according to a new study from the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute. "Our previous lab studies and human clinical trials have shown promise in treating heart failure using cardiac stem cell infusions," said Eduardo Marbn, MD, PhD, director of the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and the primary investigator of the study. "Now we find that these specialized stem cells could turn out to reverse problems associated with aging of the heart." In the study, investigators injected cardiosphere-derived cells, a specific type of stem cell known as CDCs, from newborn laboratory rats into the hearts of rats with an average age of 22 months, which is considered aged. Other laboratory rats from the same age group were assigned to receive placebo treatment, saline injections instead of stem cells. Both groups of aged rats were compared to a group of young rats with an average age of 4 months. Baseline heart function was measured in all rats, using echocardiograms, treadmill stress tests and blood analysis. The older rats underwent an additional round of testing one month after receiving cardiosphere-derived cells that came from young rats. … Continue reading

Miracle chemical ‘cocktail’ could cure spinal cord damage – New York Post

Posted: Published on August 16th, 2017

A chemical cocktail could restore movement for people crippled after suffering spinal cord injuries, suggests new research. Scientists say the mixture of three molecules could potentially be given therapeutically to patients to aid in their recovery after serious injury. After spinal cord injury or stroke, axons originating in the brains cortex and along the spinal cord become damaged, disrupting motor skills. Now, according to findings published in the journal Neuron, a team of scientists at Boston Childrens Hospital in the United States has developed a method to promote axon regrowth after injury. They administered the therapeutic cocktail of molecules to mice with either a spinal cord injury or stroke and observed that the mice were able to recover fine motor skills. Study senior author Doctor Zhigang He, of Boston Childrens Hospital and Harvard Medical School, said: In our lab, for the first time we have a treatment that allowed the spinal cord injury and the stroke model to regain functional recovery. His team designed the mixture by building on earlier work from Dr. Joshua Sanes group at Harvard who focused on optical nerve injuries. Sanes observed that the combination of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) and a protein called osteopontin … Continue reading
