Oops: Human Embryologist required in Surrogacy bill, but not produced by India – Medical Dialogues

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

New Delhi: Since its introduction, the surrogacy bill has been topic of controversy. In January, 2017, the Rajya Sabha Chairman referred the legislation, as introduced in the Lok Sabha, to the Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare for examination and a report on it. Recently, the said committee submitted its report, which was then presented in the Rajya Sabha. The committee, indeed put forward many progressive suggestions, and pointed out some very valid drawbacks in the proposed bill that need to be corrected for its successful implementation. The committee was seen strongly recommendingthat the Assisted Reproduction Technologies (ART) Bill, 2008 should be brought forth first before bringing in the surrogacy bill as surrogacy procedures cannot be conducted without assisted reproduction techniques and there is urgent need to regulate the ART clinics across the country. Amongst other recommendations, the committee made an observation, pointing out to the obvious flaw in the bill, that deals with the definition of a human embryologist-a specialty doctor necessary in the process of surrogacy and related procedures to avoid any kind of negligent and violators incidents. It was noted that the definition limitedhuman embryologist to one having the said PG degree recognised by the IMC … Continue reading

New Microscope Technique Reveals Internal Structure of Live … – Futurism

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

Advancing Science University of Illinois researchers have developed a way to produce 3-D images of live embryos in cattle that could help determine embryo viability before in vitro fertilization in humans. Infertility can be devastating for those who want children. Many seek treatment, and the cost of a single IVF cycle can be $20,000, making it desirable to succeed in as few attempts as possible. Advanced knowledge regarding the health ofembryoscould help physicians select those that are most likely to lead to successful pregnancies. The newmethod, published in the journalNature Communications, brought together electrical and computer engineering professor Gabriel Popescu and animal sciences professor Matthew Wheeler in a collaborative project through the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the U. of I. Called gradient light interference microscopy, the method solves a challenge that other methods have struggled withimaging thick, multicellular samples. In many forms of traditional biomedical microscopy, light is shined through very thin slices of tissue to produce an image. Other methods use chemical or physical markers that allow the operator to find the specific object they are looking for within a thicksample, but those markers can be toxic to living tissue, Popescu said. When looking at … Continue reading

Genetics takes fight to gardeners’ green foe – Phys.org – Phys.Org

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

A scientist from The University of Manchester has hit upon an innovative way to control greenflies which infest our gardens and farms. Dr Mouhammad Shadi Khudr, discovered that living lacewing insects- which are used as a way to biocontrol greenflies are also effective after they have died. Dr Khudr, an evolutionary ecologist based at the University's Division of Evolution and Genomic Sciences, discovered how genetic variations in greenflies' respond to the fear of predation by lacewing known as aphid lions. The greenflys' genetic variation and life history influenced how they responded to traces of their predator. He hit upon the discovery while looking at how different lineages of one species of greenfly responded to lacewings on a crop. Even though each greenfly line had a distinct way of responding to the exposure to the traces of the aphid lion they all suffered from dramatic reduction in their reproduction, he says. Dr khudr designed and lead the collaborative research, which was funded by the Freie Universitt Berlin (Free University of Berlin). The research is published in the journal Scientific Reports today. He said: "Whether alive or dead, lacewings make it more difficult for aphids to reproduce. "The smell and visual impact … Continue reading

Cancer’s Newest Miracle Combines Genetics and Immune System … – TIME

With the usual mix of anticipation and apprehension, Kaitlyn Johnson is getting ready to go to her first summer camp. She's looking forward to meeting new friends and being able to ride horses, swim and host tea parties. She's also a little nervous and a little scared, like any 7-year-old facing her first sleepaway camp. But the wonder is that Kaitlyn is leaving the house for anything but a medical facility. Diagnosed with leukemia when she was 18 months old, her life has been consumed with cancer treatments, doctors' visits and hospital stays. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common cancer among young children, accounting for a quarter of all cancer cases in kids, and it has no cure. For about 85% to 90% of children, the leukemia can, however, be effectively treated through chemotherapy. If it is not eliminated and comes back, it is, more often than not, fatal. Rounds of chemotherapy can buy patients time, but as the disease progresses, the periods of remission get shorter and shorter. "The options for these patients are not very good at all," says Dr. Theodore Laetsch, a pediatrician at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. When Kaitlyn's cancer wasn't controlled … Continue reading

5 All-Natural Remedies To Treat Eczema Without The Doctor – The Alternative Daily (blog)

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

Eczema is a skin condition where a section of the dermis become irritated, inflamed, itchy, flaky and occasionally blistered. It is surprisingly common in infants and children, but it is a problem that afflicts many teenagers and adults too. There is no sure-fire cure, and eczema sometimes goes away on its own, but there are natural treatment options that can help reduce flare-ups. Here are some important things you need to know about eczema and treating it naturally. The term basically refers to a variety of rash-like skin conditions. The symptoms of eczema include red, blotchy skin that is inflamed, irritated and itchy. Frequently, a person with the condition will scratch their skin incessantly, which can exacerbate pus-filled sores, flaking and scaly patches. Scientists believe a number of different factors can cause or contribute to the condition. For example, heredity, allergens, autoimmune disorders, environmental irritants, hormones, stress and temperature can all play a role in precipitating eczema. A susceptibility to eczema seems to run in families. However, sensitivity to detergents and common allergens can also induce symptoms. Likewise, hormonal changes linked to pregnancy, menstrual cycles and menopause have all been associated with eczema outbreaks too. Here is a list of … Continue reading

How to Leverage the Biology of Healthy Leadership (And Why Leaders Have a Duty to Take Care of Themselves) – HuffPost

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

Being part of a healthy organization contributes to the well-being, engagement, and productivity of the people in them. This may sound transparently obvious, but it is a fact that is routinely overlooked or ignored. Leaders who are patient, understanding, compassionate, and clear communicators contribute directly to the health of the people on their team. Conversely, leaders who rule by rigidity, intimidation, and manipulation may get short-term results, but they will ultimately diminish the well-being, engagement, and productivity of individuals as well as the organization. This is not touchy-feely, new age, management jargon. This is basic human biology. In the short term, the chemicals of stress motivate us. A deadline, a target, a goal, competition these can lead us to marshal useful internal resources. Over time, however, a constant drip of stress hormones will take a significant toll on our individual health, our performance, and on our relationship to others. This is why it is vital that people in an organization feel that they matter and that their well-being matters. This is the role of the leader. Maintaining the bandwidth to do this is why leaders have a duty to work on their own well-being. There are some obvious ways to … Continue reading

We’ve studied gender and STEM for 25 years. The science doesn’t support the Google memo. – Recode

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

A Google engineer who was fired for posting an online claim that womens biology makes them less able than men to work in technology jobs has charged that he is being smeared and is a victim of political correctness. James Damore, 28, questioned the companys diversity policies and claimed that scientific data backed up his assertions. Google CEO Sundar Pichai wrote that Damores 3,300-word manifesto crossed the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in the workplace. Pichai noted that To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not OK. Damore argued that many men in the company agreed with his sentiments. Thats not surprising, since the idea that women just cant hack it in math and science has been around for a very long time. It has been argued that womens lack of a math gene, their brain structures and their inherent psychological traits put most of them out of the game. Some critics sided with Damore. For example, columnist Ross Douthat of the New York Times found his scientific arguments intriguing. But are they? What are the real facts? We have been researching issues of gender … Continue reading

Expanded concussion program protects more NJ student athletes – Press of Atlantic City

Posted: Published on August 14th, 2017

Our knowledge about the dangers of sports-related concussions has come a long way in the past decade. There was a time when the NFL celebrated the biggest hits in popular weekly videos and many held the misguided belief that athletes, from pros to pee-wees, should be expected to play hurt and just shake it off when they had their bell rung. That thinking has not been eliminated, but the scientific evidence about how serious, even deadly, brain injuries can be has raised awareness about the risks involved with athletic competition. The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there are about 300,000 sports-related brain concussions in the United States each year. New Jersey was among the first group of states to address the issue at the scholastic level, when legislators passed an interscholastic athletics program in 2010 that required special head-injury and concussion diagnosis and treatment training for high school physicians, coaches and trainers. The law outlined protocols for when a student suffered a serious head injury. Shortly after that, the law was expanded to include cheerleaders. Last month, New Jersey legislators wisely expanded the program beyond athletes competing against other schools to include students participating in recreational and … Continue reading

Theres obviously some damage to the hospital, Kelly McCreary told Entertainment Weekly about the new season, which will start right after the finale explosion.
