Please enable Javascript to watch this video MEMPHIS, Tenn. Tawanda Cason is a teacher on a mission. "I'm trying to help Mrs. Robinson, she's teaching kindergarten here in the summer program. She has a son with cerebral palsy, CP, and she has to spend a lot of money on equipment," she said. The piece of equipment needed in this case is a $2,500 stroller. But Tawanda got the ball rolling before we ever showed up. "So I reached out to my family and friends and collected $1,300. So $1,300 toward that $2,500," she said. "Well, we're going to help you out today," WREG's Tim Simpson said, handing her $300 from News Channel 3 and an additional $300 from an anonymous doctor in Collierville. That's a total of $600 to put toward that chair. "Thank you so much, she's going to be so excited." It's time to roll, from the library to principal's office. But our recipient, Denise Robinson, isn't in trouble. She's about to receive an unexpected blessing. "We started working together last week, and you told me so much about EJ and how you were working this summer to buy him a stroller that cost $2,500. Your story just … Continue reading

Cerebral Palsy and Transitioning into Adulthood – Cerebral Palsy News Today

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2017

I have met plenty of people along the way who have cerebral palsy, mostly from my being a columnist and speaker. They email me or tell me their concerns and experiences with the disability and often request my advice. I have noticed an increasing number of people who are frustrated by the limited information available about cerebral palsy, especially for those transitioning into adulthood. I hear you and understand the problems, and I hope that I can make getting older a little easier. When the doctor tells you that cerebral palsy is a non-progressive disability, but you find out later that complications happen as you age, you can become frustrated. Yes, cerebral palsy occurs when the brain is injured and its a one-time injury. However, other issues develop due to constant moving, stiffness, and adapting muscles throughout the years. No one discusses this when you are young. I am in my early 40s, so Im not a complete expert on aging and cerebral palsy. From my experience, cerebral palsy does stay pretty much the same. However, how your body physically reacts to cerebral palsy will change. I know that when I was younger I could bounce back from anything with ease. I … Continue reading

New drug used on mice could hold potential for traumatic brain … – Washington Post

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2017

By Jenna Gallegos By Jenna Gallegos July 10 at 3:00 PM For the first time, scientists have reversed memory and learning deficits in mice following traumatic brain injuries. Thisnew research could someday leadto treatments for head traumaand debilitating cognitive diseases. More than 2 million Americans with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are seen in hospital emergency rooms every year. Millions more skip a hospital visit despite suffering a head injury that could cause lasting damage, according to researchers. In a study published Monday in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, scientists at the University of California in San Francisco found that a new experimental drug can restore normal function in mice following two types of TBIs. Geoffrey Manley, the chief of neurosurgery at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, sometimes sees dozens of TBI cases a week. He was not involved in the study but called the results very exciting from a clinical perspective. In previous trials where drugs proved effective in mice, treatments were administered right after the injury, according to Manley. But diagnosis and treatment within a few hours does not always occur with humans, he explained. The new successful treatment, which was administered to the mice two to … Continue reading

Charlie Gard: key questions answered – The Guardian

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2017

Charlie Gard has a rare mitochondrial disease caused by a genetic defect. Photograph: Family handout/PA Charlie has a very rare mitochondrial disease caused by a genetic defect inherited from his parents. The official diagnosis is infantile onset encephalomyopathic mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome, referred to generally as MDDS. Mitochondria supply energy to the cells in the human body. Mitochondrial failure leads to cellular injury and cell death. When multiple cells fail, the bodys organs are damaged and shut down. These diseases are usually fatal and kill children, although sometimes they dont show up until adulthood. Where they dont kill, they cause serious permanent brain damage. Charlie is in intensive care at Great Ormond Street hospital in London, the leading childrens hospital in the UK. Life support machines are keeping him alive. The hospital says that he has severe brain damage, cannot move or breathe by himself, is deaf and has epilepsy. It says his heart, liver and kidneys are also affected. His eyelids cannot stay open and because of the weakness of the muscles, his eyes point in different directions and the damage to the brain will not allow his sight to develop. However, Charlies mother, Connie Yates, said on BBC … Continue reading

High burden of traumatic brain injuries in the EU and China – Medical Xpress

Posted: Published on July 12th, 2017

July 11, 2017 Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a serious public health threat contributing to mortality and morbidity around the world, according to two studies published in PLOS Medicine that quantify the burden of TBI on the populations of Europe and China, respectively. In the first study, Marek Majdan of Trnava University, Slovakia, and colleagues calculated the Years of Life Lost (YLL) due to TBI for 16 European countries. Using data acquired from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union, the researchers found that a total of 17,049 TBI deaths occurred in the countries in 2013, translating into 374,636 YLL. Each TBI death was, on average, associated with 24.3 YLL and the summary rate was 259.1 TBI YLL per 100,000 people (95% CI: 205.8 to 312.3). Males accounted for significantly more TBI YLL than females (82% of all TBI YLL, a rate ratio 3.24, 95% CI: 3.24 to 3.27). Falls and traffic accidents were the most common external cause of TBI YLL. Extrapolating the numbers to the entire EU, about 1.3 million YLL were attributable to TBI in 2013. "We believe this information could facilitate policy makers in tailoring preventive action so that the respective measures are targeted to … Continue reading

My Eczema Was Under ControlUntil I Got Pregnant – Health.com

People say that pregnancy is supposed to be a happy time. Well, Im pretty sure those people don'thave eczema. For mea woman with a severe case of the skin condition, which causes itchy, red rashes on the skinthose nine months were the most miserable days of my life. Up until I got pregnant at age 17, my eczema was manageable. I was diagnosed when I was four years old, and used the same topical steroid for years. Whenever I had a flare, I put on the cream and my skin would calm down. When I was eight, I moved to Tampa, Florida, and, despite the occasional rash, I still wore shorts and tank tops. Besides, the air felt good on my skin. But by the time I entered middle school, things started to get worse. The patches were spreadingto my wrists, the back of my legs, and eventually to my face. Then I got pregnant, and my skin just went crazy. RELATED: 5 Things You Should Never Say to Someone With Eczema I was two months pregnant when the left side of my face started to itch uncontrollably. The art of construction: Chemistry lab takes center stage in an artist’s exhibition – MIT News

Posted: Published on July 11th, 2017

From many perspectives, a construction site represents a headache an area in flux, hovering between functional and unusable, a source of financial and emotional stress. When will the work be completed? When can the area return to its finished state? And will it be done by the estimated, yet counted upon deadline, for the estimated, yet counted upon budget? To perceive a space mid-renovation in any other way to take it even further and actually be inspired, as opposed to daunted requires a truly unique vision. Angel Chen MS '17, a recent masters degree recipient from MITs Program in Art, Culture, and Technology (ACT), not only possesses that vision, but defines it. Chen, who received her bachelors degree in philosophy and computer science from McGill University in 2009, came to MIT in 2015, and made quite an impact over the course of her time in ACT. The 2017 second-place recipient of MITs Harold and Arlene Schnitzer Prize in the Visual Arts, Chens art practice at MIT has revolved around understanding complex and technical systems. [ACT] supports my background and interest very well because it encourages experiments in new modes of relating a critical art practice to culture and to technology, … Continue reading

Team chemistry, experience lead Phil Hardin 10U All-Stars to World Series – Meridian Star

Posted: Published on July 11th, 2017

The Phil Hardin 10U All-Stars were only selected a few weeks ago, but the short time to practice together didnt create any team chemistry challenges. Just the opposite, in fact. Whether through travel ball or being on each others team during the Phil Hardin regular season, the more than a dozen members of the team were already well familiar with one another. That showed in the results: When the team traveled to Long Beach last week for the Cal Ripken state tournament, it won the 10U competition in five games by a combined score of 66-5. Now, the 10U All-Stars turn their sights toward Paragould, Ark., where they will begin play in the Cal Ripken World Series Thursday. Head coach Michael Vaughn said he isnt surprised at last weeks dominant performance at the state tournament. They all want to win, and they understand whats needed (to win), Vaughn said. Theyre all friends, and theyve been coached through travel ball, which helps a lot. These kids practice three times a week and get as much reps as they can get. The team was practicing at Southeast Lauderdales baseball field Monday evening, preparing for what looks to be a tough slate of … Continue reading
